I highly recommend this if your headed to Maui! Everyone at the ranch was super friendly and went out of their way to accommodate everyone. I rode at the front of the line with my horse Buck and was able to talk to the guide one on one while walking. He was very informative and friendly. He had lots of fun stories to share too. We were able to eat fresh fruit that they either picked or cut down along the way. We stopped often for photo opportunities and were able to run the horses twice. My only critique would be that the horses only had two speeds..very slow or extremely fast. The horses are well trained and know exactly where to go and to walk slow. This didn't bother me since it was relaxing and the view was spectacular. When it came time to gallop however, my horse bolted forward at breakneck speed. I'm an experienced rider so I had no problem staying on but a beginner might not have been so lucky. I think cantering would have been a safer option since almost everyone there was a newbie at riding. This is my only critique though..everything else was amazing and I would definitely go back. I love how the staff interacted with their guests and shared their beautiful ranch. I didn't feel rushed at all and was given extra time afterwards to mingle and visit all the other critters there. I give this ranch a five out of five!!

Breathtaking two hour ride from valley to coastline. Horses were gentle on novice riders. All riding levels were matched appropriately.

I'm an avid rider and was looking to satisfy my horse fix while on vacation on Maui. I read a lot of reviews of the stables on Maui and the Mendes Ranch came up as the only place to run with the horses. The location is utterly breathtaking with the ranch situated overlooking the Pacific on some serious cliffs. Since it is a working ranch, be prepared for mud and dirt and animal smells. The paniolos ensure you have an orientation of the saddle, how to mount your horse and you can sign a waiver if you would rather not wear a helmet, but young children are required to wear helmets. They choose your horse based on your experience but everyone rides together. Additionally, no matter your experience level, you are given the opportunity to run your horse on two inclines where the horses know they will run and where they will stop. So anyone can do this if they are up to it. It's a lot of fun and gives folks the feeling they are truly riding. My ride even had a small boy on his first ride ever and his little pony cantered a small portion of the run. The paniolos took great care of everyone and stopped for beautiful photo ops and even cut local passion fruit off a tree so everyone could try it! Overall it's a great place to ride if you're a beginner or experienced and the views over the ocean are gorgeous.
