I went on an afternoon horseback ride at Mendes Ranch while in Maui on my honeymoon. My husband isn’t much into horseback riding, but he came along to Mendes Ranch and found there was a lovely spot to hang out, sip coffee, read and take in the gorgeous view. The fellows who run the ranch are really thoughtful about what horses they pair with which riders based on experience. As a relative newbie, I was placed with Mikey and had a great time. The ride is exceptionally gorgeous, all along the mountainside looking down at the ocean. At a certain point in the ride you go through a tree-filled jungle-type area and Rocky, one of the trail guides, actually picked and opened a passion fruit for me to eat as I was riding! It’s definitely a nice and slow pace, though you do have a chance to "run" briefly, which is exhilarating, but there’s no pressure to do it if you’re not comfortable. The trail guides are also nice enough to take photos of you on your horse with the ocean in the backdrop. Overall, this was one of the most beautiful, exciting things I did on vacation in Maui and would highly recommend it! However, if you’re afraid of heights or uncomfortable with riding a horse that is going up or down a steep mountain, you might be wary of doing this.
