If you can only do one excursion while in Alaska, you have to hike the Mendenhall Glacier! For me this was the highlight of my Alaska cruise. We had no problem finding our tour guide at the tramway building. Our guides Andy and Matt did an excellent job. They gave us waterproof gear and safety equipment to wear and made sure it fit everyone correctly. We received a safety briefing prior to getting in the canoe. We each were given a dry bag to store small items while in the canoe and it also contained several snack items. You need to have some fitness to do this tour. The 2.5 mile canoe trip was a bit challenging for some, but everyone made it. Even though it rained for a short time on the glacier I stayed warm and dry in the gear I was issued. When we reached the glacier we received another safety briefing before we put on our crampons. We were fortunate to find a small ice cave opening. Both guides provided good information regarding the glacier. Since no one had to get back early we spent an extended time hiking the glacier. There are no words to adequately describe the amazing views. I highly recommend doing this tour!

I can not recommend this tour highly enough! My wife and I went to Juneau on a cruise and had previously signed up for the Mendenhall Glacier tour with Liquid Alaska. Our guides were Alli and Matt. Both were very friendly and very knowledgeable. Matt picked us up at the harbor and drove the group out to the meeting area near the glacial lake. The tour provided appropriately sized waterproof boots, a waterproof stuff sack complete with snacks, trekking poles, a life vest, and crampons. The expedition began with a 2-mile row to the glacier. Matt and Alli reviewed safety procedures with the group and did a great job leading our group as we rowed together across the lake. Once we got to the glacier, we had a safety briefing and set out to hike the glacier. Glacier conditions and weather conditions obviously change daily, but Matt and Alli did a great job leading our group and letting us explore the glacier’s features. This was without a doubt the single most amazing experience I had while in Alaska. I would have spent days on Mendenhall if I could have. The entire experience was an A+ and I can’t recommend it highly enough.

Hiking on a glacier is an amazing experience and I absolutely recommend it. This tour was a really great combination of paddling and hiking and provided amazing views. Our cruise ship was actually slightly late to port and we opted to hop the tender boat which dropped us off downtown. Liquid Alaska actually called me about an hour before our tour to verify our location and was accommodating enough to come get us downtown instead of at the pier (saving us a 30 minute walk). Andrew was a fantastic guide from pointing out local sights on the drive in to his "shaggy dog" story on the paddle back in. And Matt did a really great job of guiding our canoe to the beachhead. While the tour provided waterproof gear and footwear, and I was wearing my smart wool socks, I rather wish I had brought a second pair as my toes definitely started to get cold in just a pair of wellingtons (and spikes) on the ice. It was also a bit of a long day. While the tour didn't start until 2:45 and got back around 7:30, it might've been nice if there had been a thought to snacks for after the paddle. Since we had been so keen to get off the boat and see town before our tour, we ended up going 8 hours with nothing but a bit of hot cocoa at the end. It wasn't a big deal at the time as the glacier was so incredible that I didn't have time to think about much else, but our second excursion, in Skagway, on to a glacier included snacks at every turn and I noticed in hindsight how much warmer/more energy I had as a result. All I can say is that the trip is worth it and this company made the whole thing easy from start to finish. Just do it!

We thank you for your review and are happy to hear that you had an amazing time! Thank you for your feedback about the snacks we offer. On every tour we provide snacks which include trail mix, mixed nuts, granola bars, bottled water and hot beverages. This is meant only to be a snack during the tour and not a full meal and because of the duration of the excursion, there is not a lot of extra time for anything longer than a snack in order to return guests back to their ships on time. For clothing we provide protective layers from the elements including rain jacket, rain pants, boots, and safety equipment. We allow guests to bring their own base layer clothing. Weather in Alaska can be quite unpredictable so we always advise being prepared by dressing in warm clothing. Thank you again for joining us on tour - we hope to host you again sometime in the future!
