While traveling to Alaska on business, a coworker and I decided to visit Mendenhall Glacier in the most amazing way...kayaking the lake, short hike up Mendenhall Glacier and touring inside of the amazing ICE CAVES of the Glacier!! OMG! It was awesome from beginning to the end. There are many vendors providing this adventure on Juneau, but I want to HIGHLY RECOMMEND Liquid Alaska Tours! The guides were both knowledgeable and friendly. The gear they provide for the experience, the transportation to the glacier, the kayak used to navigate Lake Mendenhall...EVERYTHING was top notch. Paul and Griffin were our guides and I have to tell you...the were the best. If you are looking for a "bucket list" experience will in Juneau...book this one today!

On a late May cruise we booked this adventure and going inside an ice cave became the best excursion of our trip. We booked this on our own because we didn't see any tours offered by Holland America that appealed. You meet the van at the pier and travel to Mendenhall Glacier with guides Josiah and Micah. Our party was supposed to 16 but the Princess Cruise was running hours late so 8 of us headed across a lake padding a long canoe. It is about 2.5 miles to an ice cave at the base of Mendenhall. We were suited up with boots, coats, hard hats and hiking poles. We went over some mildly rugged gravel trail and inside the cave. Spectacular colors of blues and greens. We hiked through the cave and up onto Mendenhall. This adventure requires some stamina and I was winded but able to do it. One elderly woman in our group was unsteady on her feet so Micah helped her through the ice. This trip offered a spectacular view of Mendenhall and the ice cave was memorable. You need enough energy to row back across the lake. I understand that as summer progresses and the ice melts, the cave is not always accessible. But when it is, it's a once in a lifetime experience for the traveler.
