Mendenhall Lake Canoe Adventure

Overview
Paddle across Mendenhall Lake, navigating past icebergs, surrounded by Alaskan wildlife on an exceptionally stable, 28-foot, traditional Tlingit-style canoe, with all modern safety gear supplied. Venture within a safe distance of the awe-inspiring face of the Mendenhall Glacier and the beautiful Nugget Falls where you will hit the beach and refuel for the return paddle with an Alaskan-style snack. When I discovered that only 2 couples had signed up for this excursion, I wondered what others knew and I didn't. But after completing our circumnavigation of Mendenhall Glacier Lake with our guide Don, I realized that the 4 of us were the smartest passengers on the cruise. The experience was fantastic. Even though there were only 5 of us paddling a 12 person canoe, we did a great job and felt so accomplished at the end. Being able to get so close to the Mendenhall Glacier was extraordinary. 33 years ago we had been able to walk on the glacier. This is no longer possible. Now the closest you can get is to fly over by helicopter. We were so close. It was exhilarating. Our guide, Don was a fountain of information and a master at getting the 4 novice paddlers work in unison. Kudos to Don!

Canoeing as a group, we were with a group from our cruise ship. Our initial excursion was canceled. This trip was a substitution but did not disappoint. Jack was a great guide, and treats people well, especially if they're their from Indiana on their birthday!

Our tour guide Don with Alaska Adventure tours was great to go with. We never felt unsafe and he had just the right amount of background stories about the area and life in Alaska. The 16 person plus a guide canoe was plenty stable and they provide boots to keep your feet dry and rain gear if needed. It was about a 30 minute short bus drive from the cruise ship dock to the lake and our driver Jimmy also had plenty of good stories to share along the way to keep things interesting. I rated this three stars although the company was great the basis of the tour was only ok. We rowed at least 2 hours of the tour to spend about 10 minutes by the glacier and 15 by the waterfall. They need to figure out a way to improve that rowing to sight seeing ratio. The salmon spread and crackers came at the end and was about 2 crackers per person which was more insulting than refreshing.
