The kayaking was great. Views of the glacier and waterfall are fantastic. The equipment was in good condition. They are tandem kayaks. They don’t allow you to get close to the glacier but we were by the icebergs that float out. The salmon bake was okay but it is a long ride to the site.

We booked the Mendenhall Lake Kayak & Salmon Bake - for two for USD 632.70. The tour was advertised as ā€œBe one of the lucky few to experience the majestic Mendenhall Glacier up close, as you travel by kayak, under a very limited U.S. Forest Service permit.ā€œ Now hereā€˜s what we got: a 2 hour group paddling. When we started nearing the glacier and the excitment going up we were told we can’t get any closer since they do NOT have a permit for that. At the same time a group in a canoe passed us and went up to the glacier. We were told they have a different permit. The picture in the advertisment implied we would go to the tip of the glacier paddling along the ice. Nothing of that happened. One may as well opt for the Glacier View Sea Kayaking at half the price. We did 3 tours on our trip (salmon fishing, river rafting and Whale watching). This was the most disappointing, the shortest and yet the most expensive one. Furthermore, albeit the Mendenhall is a big or the biggest glacier, the tip throwing into the lake is quite small. You’ll see much bigger glaciers and much closer from your cruiseship in Glacier Bay. Also the salmon bake is not worth the price. A fast food paced simple buffet with salmon from the grill. You’re better off going to the restaurant or enjoy the buffet on your cruiseship that always serves salmon in Alaska for free.

Payton was the most amazing guide! Super awesome! Definitely a once-in-a-lifetime experience kayaking bucket list item on the Lake to see the glacier and the iceberg. Great time . She’s a Kentucky-Alaskan!
