Someone further north had recommended this show above others in the area. I'm glad they did because Mitai is not as well advertised. But it's worth the search.Too often these "cultural experiences" come off kitschy and inauthentic. The Mitai Maori experience didn't fall into this trap. From the very beginning, everyone seemed to genuinely want to share their culture. Even though it was a show it didn't come off as that. They'll introduce you to the culture and values. Then show you how the regional tribes would interact. After the performance, you get a hangi meal. Much like a Hawaiian luau except with chicken and lamb instead of pork. The hangi meats and potatoes have a very unique flavor. The rest of the buffet is good. Especially the desserts. Afterward, we got a special treat. A nighttime walk to Rainbow Springs. The springs themselves are more interesting than picturesque. And the little blue pinpoint lights of the glow worms is a pretty cool.

We had a brief stay in Rotorua and had already visited a Maori cultural experience during the day, but we booked this on impulse after seeing the leaflet for the evening experience including hangi and glow worms. It was incredible. We were collected from our accommodation and driven to Mitai village. We were the first to arrive and were shown to our table in the dining room. When the rest of the guest arrived we were given an introductory talk by our guide, then we were shown around some of the village, and watched the Maori warriors arrive by canoe in the stream. We were shown the hangi fresh from the ground, and then watched the cultural performance of combat, song, dance, and games. It was spiritual, but also informative and entertaining. The hangi was served as a buffet and was delicious. Following the meal we saw some more of the village by night, ending with the glow worms. An amazing evening to end our time in Rotorua.

This tour was more than we expected! It was full of wonderful cultural experiences. Our host was amazing! Funny, informative , interesting, thorough. We felt as if we had stepped back in time and experienced the Maori life. Food was excellent and plenty of it. I
