I have visited a few of the cultural villages in Rotorua and Mitai is the best. We were picked up from our hotel and greeted by the very friendly John, our driver.
On arrival at Mitai we spent a short time in the dining area waiting for other guests to arrive then were split into groups for a talk about the wake or traditional canoe, and then were shown where our hangi meal was cooked under the ground.
Then a short walk to the sacred spring before the warriors arrived in their canoe, paddling down the river. Next to the powhiri or greeting ceremony, set in a cultural village. The singing and dancing were excellent and the show was just the right length.
Back to the wharekai for our delicious meal. Everything was so tasty and the seafood chowder was the best I’ve ever had. Plenty of everything served buffet style. Alcohol is available to purchase.
After eating we went in small groups into the forest by torchlight to learn some ancient secrets about the native flora and see the magical glow worms all over everywhere.
We were transported back to our hotel after a memorable evening. If you are looking to experience a cultural evening, go to Mitai.
