Morning Rogue River Hellgate Canyon Half-Day Trip

Overview

The half-day trip on the Rogue River through Hellgate Canyon is our most scenic half-day trip. The forbidding walls of Hellgate Canyon rise out of the water at the rivers edge marking a dramatic point of transition into the whitewater downstream. As we float through the canyon osprey and eagles fly over head as the search the river for fish. This trip flows through two distinct gorges and concludes with two of the best class II rapids on the day section of the Rogue River. This is a great trip anyone wanting to learn to inflatable kayak or any family with younger kids wanting to raft.

My son and I went on a half day float. Lelah was our guide. I have never been with a better guide. She was knowledgeable, skilled and flat out pleasant to be around. She took pictures for us and was a wealth of knowledge. She shared the history of our surroundings, her experiences and again just pleasant to be around. She knows the river like the back of her hand and kept us at ease when the "scary" parts were coming as my son would say. This place is great, from he time we walked in the door we were surrounded by happy and helpful people. They know their stuff and are the best in the business. If Lelah is the example of how these folks do business then this place is only going to get bigger and better. I am sure all the other guides are as courteous and knowledgeable as Lelah but for my money and memories I will be requesting her from now on. We only went on the half day float but the experience has convinced me to do a multi day trip and I will expect to have Lelah as a guide. If you read this Lelah be ready for a once a summer trip with the boy and me.

July 2018, 1st day of summer to be exact. Beautiful morning and it was just the two of us with our excellent guild Nick aka Nicholas Dietz. Was worried about water temp that early in the morning but proved to be refreshing. Class I and II rapids, enough to get the heart racing before each approach. Guide Nick explained where each upcoming hazard was going to be and more importantly, where to get the best ride out of each set of rapids. Nick also explained the history of the canyon and river and pointed out all of the natural beauty and history between rapids. Different perspective of the river being on the river. Exciting and relaxing all in one place. Thank you Nick! Suggestion: Bring an waterproof action camera with selfie stick instead of helmet mounted camera. (They do offer helmets with mounts which is convenient if you want to go that route) Stick the selfie stick in between PFD and body so it is just below chin for the action shots in rapids and us for selfies in the calmer waters. Remember to make sure strap is through a buckle as cameras don't float... I wish we had time for the full day; Next time we'll plan better.

Bryan, our guide, grew up rafting and rowing the Rogue. From Scott, the river manager, to every person on the staff, we were pampered with our every need being looked after. I chose an inflatable kayak for this trip and was rewarded with wonderful lines on numerous rapids, specifically the upper and lower Galice runs. Bryan is extremely adept in showing the lines and giving safety talks before each run. Outstandingly professional!
