The bus departs at 9am and heads for Mount Rushmore! You will have a little over an hour to look around at your own convenience and enjoy the sites and beauty that you came to South Dakota for. We stop here first because Mount Rushmore is at it's best in the morning sun. Gutzon Borglum carved this mountain facing east towards the morning sun and intended it to be viewed this way.

After lunch we depart for the Needles Hwy. This 14 mile scenic drive is sure to leave you breathless and awe struck at amazing beauty of the Black Hills. Sit back and enjoy the ride and watch the crowd gather around when we drive the bus through the Needles Eye Tunnel. With only inches to spare on each side of the bus you can relish in the fact that you are not the one driving.

My family and I booked a three-day tour of the badlands, black hills, buffalo round up and Mt. Rushmore with Mount Rushmore Tours the last week of September and we could not be happier with the tours and services. We were so very pleased with every detail of the trip. Herman Jones and Deb were magnificent event planners and went way out of their way to ensure that we had a marvelous time. We just cannot say enough good things about Gary, our private van driver for days 1&2. He was absolutely delightful and made those days so pleasant and memorable for us. We had some health challenges among us, of which Gary was so thoughtful in so many ways. The trips to badlands and all the interesting towns and sights surrounding really came alive with Gary as our guide, including the night lighting ceremony at the Mt. Rushmore Monument--this is a DO NOT MISS EVENT! That was spectacular and turned out to be the highlight of the trip for all of us, and it was an after-thought by Gary as it wasn't on our itinerary!. The day before the buffalo round up, Gary suggested a quick stop at Walmart to purchase folding chairs to sit in while at the buffalo round up (otherwise, we would have been standing in one place for hours! Best $15 spent--thank you, Gary!). The day of the round up starts very early in the morning, includes a fun chuck wagon style breakfast at Fort Hayes and then off to the see the buffalo herded by cowboys and ATVs. :) Chuckled at that! We had our first taste of buffalo brisket for lunch at the corals and wow, it was a winner! All in all, the buffalo was also a do not miss event. Once back on the road for a full day of touring some fantastic sites, things I couldn't even believe were in SD, we were driven and guided by Clint. What a treasure-trove of information and fun, not to mention STELLAR driving skills. He truly threaded that bus through the eye of a needle! After such an exciting trip, we returned to Fort Hayes to the chuck wagon dinner and dinner show. What a treat! It was very well organized and the performers were great. We came away from this trip with such great experiences and memories and we cannot say enough good things about Mount Rushmore Tours. Believe us, you'll not regret your decision to join their tours! To Trip Advisor: The required field for "what sort of visit was this" doesn't include an option for seniors! Our dad is 83 and my two sisters and I are in our early sixties (so we are not friends, we are family, but not with young children or teens). Trip advisor, you need to fix this option or don't make it required!

If you want to get a good idea of the Black Hills and Mount Rushmore, don't try doing it yourself, go on the Ft Hays Mount Rurhmore Tour. Rory, our tour director, bus driver, and stand up (while sitting) comic kept us in stitches while he professionally educated us on the people, attractions, animals, plants, and history of the area. Best tour guide of our lives ans we go on many tours. The Chuckwagon Dinner to finish the day was incredible, with the Western Show even better. Super hour+ of western and country classics played by a great band. Lizzie, the fiddle player, was a show stopper! The $100 price seemed a little chancy when ordering tickets, but we got 12 hours of high-level entertainment and not having to drive those dangerous roads. Take this tour!

Travelled solo to see Mt. Rushmore & researched a few day trip options. This was one of the best I have ever experienced. They offer free pick-up and drop off from Rapid City hotels; was actually picked up and dropped off by company owner, who is born & raised in SD. Started with a pancake breakfast at Ft. Hays, then boarded 26 or so person bus to Mt. Rushmore; nice, clean bus with a bathroom. Driver shared a lot of history along the drive. Over the 9 hours, there is about 1-hour at Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse, lunch at Coolidge's summer house. Bus was able to drive through narrow tunnels. Ends with a chuck wagon dinner and country music. Don't be fooled about being on a bus all day -- getting off and on and walking around quickly at each stop to get everything in is tiring. I highly recommend this tour -- it's a family owned and run company which is significant. It's under valued and would have paid more to see all the best sites of the area in one day. Tours offered 7-days/week but only during tourist season; closed Oct - Mother's Day. Tours start early May.
