I reviewed the Napa country Winery tours advertised and decided on this one because it was limited to a small group in a van and three wineries. It turned out to be a really good choice. If you are on a limited budget, this might not be the tour for you. The pickup was ½ block away at the Marriott (WHARF) 8:30. We left and crossed the Golden Gate, while our driver did a good summary of all the history and then took the freeway exit leading to Napa. Our first stop in Napa was at a private winery- Castello d Amorosa Castle. This winery is housed in a large castle overlooking the vineyard with tiles, wall murals and art decor imported from Austria and Hungary from the 14th century. The Castle is all original with a large overlook and fantastic views. You have an admission fee but it is well worth it. The admission includes a tour of the winery, history, and a wine tasting of their premium wines. During the tour you also get a tour of the wine making process and old wine presses from different eras. The wines were exceptional and we bought two bottles from our tasting home in our luggage-one Pinot Noir and one Merlot but pricey - costing almost $100. One couple bought a case to ship home. We finished at Castello’s and got back in the van and drove to our next winery-V- Sattui winery in St Helena. Skywest Tours includes a free lunch at V. Sattui’s for this tour. You are given a lunch coupon for their deli. V. Sattui’s has a different flair than Castellos and more of a park like setting with picnic benches. The wine tasting was $25.00 so we decided to skip this one and just have our lunch and walk around the grounds. Again, this is another higher end winery and the vineyards are beautiful. Sattui’s has a store in their deli where you can buy snacks and also buy bottles of their wine in there wine store. We decided to finish lunch and hang out. . The tour moved to the Robert Mondavi Winery. Robert Mondavi was a true legend in Napa. I always thought they made and sold just discount to mid price wines.Well sort of but not really. They have sold and still sell some of the best and most expensive vintage wines in the world, some at auction. This is now a family run business since Rober Mondavi’s death. Unlike the other tours that offer wine tasting of several different wines, they sell individual glasses for a reasonable price. I had two glasses of Pinot Noir. Many of their better wines are not sold in stores and can only be purchased at the winery. Not sure if they do mail order. The grounds of Robert Mondavi’s are beautiful with a lush green backyard and wine vineyards that extend forever. There are hundreds of wineries in Napa – but this tour hit three of the best. Our guide was courteous and knowledgeable-he was great. A great tour-got back to SF at 5:00

Even though the Castello di Amorosa visit seemed rushed, I enjoyed myself overall. Our driver and guide, Zach/Zak, was very knowledgeable about everything we did during this trip, and he kept things fun.
