What To Expect

Old Savannah Tours

Trolleys operate on a 20-minute pickup schedule from 9:00am to 4:30pm for your convenience. Find a seat and begin your 1.5-hour tour of the history of Savannah. Listen to your guide recount more than 270 years of American history. Enjoy the narration as you ride through one of the largest National Urban Historic Landmarked Districts in the United States. Ride on cobblestone streets and in the shade of moss-draped oaks. See stately mansions, beautiful squares, and romantic views of the river. Learn about the Old South on this easy-going, fun tour of Savannah.

The Trolley (Bus) was clean and comfortable. The driver/tour guide was exceedingly knowledgeable, friendly, accommodating and just plain fun to ride with. At many of the stops,"period characters" would board the bus and make a short, sometime humorous, presentation of the history and attractions of that particular stop.. Quite enjoyable. It offered a thorough overview of Historic Savannah and was well worth the money. There are several trolley tours available. I recommend this one for sure.

While not in Savannah very long, I still wanted to see the area, and get a lesson on the history. Julie, our guide and driver, didn't disappoint. She was knowledgeable, witty, and welcoming. At 2 different stops, actors in period clothing came onto the trolley and told a tale of their life. Lots of films have been shot in the area. One being Forrest Gump. We circled the park where the famous " box of chocolates" scene was filmed. There's an option to jump on and off the trolley during the 16 stops along the way, $33/ea as of today. Overview tour takes about 100 minutes, $26/ea as of today. Check with your hotel concierge for tickets and discounts. A van arrived just outside my hotel to take me to the visitor's center for boarding the trolley. Beautiful city rich in history, architecture and good eats.

I'm pretty skeptical about tourist type businesses. I typically prefer seeing and doing things on my own. But I have to admit that Old Savannah Tours (the ones with the white buses) did a good job of both informing and entertaining. We rode the entire route on our first day in town to get an overview of the city and get a lay of the land, and then we could do a deeper dive on what interested us. Our driver was Nelvis, who was fun; while a few of his facts were kind of sketchy, overall his historical spiel was accurate. All in good fun. Worth the money for the 90-100 minute circuit; we didn't end up using the hop-on/hop-off aspect the rest of the day. (Check out the free "dot" bus to get around the Historic District; runs every 10 minutes until midnight.)
