Kenai Fjords National Park
In Kenai Fjords National Park, over half of the landmass is covered by the enormous Harding Icefield, a thousand-foot block of ice that dates back to the last Ice Age. The Harding spills out in all directions in the form of glaciers. Some stretch northwest into rugged hills of the Kenai Peninsula. Others—five of them, to be exact—reach as far as the sea along the craggy coast of the Gulf of Alaska.

Fantastic Tour! I will say we were lucky with both weather and wildlife, and you may not be, but I can say that the boat was well handled and the captain and crew did a great job spotting wildlife from far out. The narration throughout was engaging and highly informative. The crew was kind and curteous. The food was delicious. We were very luck to see Orca's (Two different pods!) out of season, and one of the crew was able to identify not only the type (one pod of residents and another of transients) but even which pods we were looking at by the individuals in the pod! That is an awesome level of detail.

I kept Anchorage, Seward, Girdwood, Cooper Landing, Soldotna, and Homer weather forecast on my phone to keep us updated where to go for best weather activities. On a sunny forecast, we chose the all day boat tour the includes lunch and dinner at Fox Island. The well spoken captain made sure that both sides of the boat had a close look at Alaska’s outdoor scenery enchantments. We took a battery charger for our phones to continue taking photos. Later, we picked the best and deleted the flawed photos.

My family did the Kenai Fjords Glacier tour today, stopping at Fox Island. We had horrible weather and were not able to get out to the glacier. The tour still would have been fine (we saw puffins, orcas and a humpback whale), but this was the worst social distancing we’ve experienced so far in AK. The tour company did not enforce the mask policy and 2/3 of the passengers took off their masks as soon as they got on the boat. When wildlife was in sight people would crowd around your area to see out the windows, essentially breathing all over you. We are very diligent mask wearers, and followed all the rules for testing in order to get to AK. When we asked the crew to enforce the rules they told us they were “not allowed to say anything directly to passengers about their masks”. What?!?! If masks are important to you, you may try a different tour company.
