New Orleans St. Louis #3 Cemetery Walking Tour: Angels, Architecture and Ghosts

Overview
Local award-winning author and historian Sally Asher will take you on a tour of a famous New Orleans cemetery that she wrote about her in book "Stories from the St. Louis Cemeteries of New Orleans." On this walking tour, you'll learn about burial practices, types of tombs, and visit the graves of some of the city's notable (and notorious) citizens including the hunchbacked photographer who secretly photographed prostitutes, the woman behind the quirky castle, the famed architect whose ship went down with over a 100 prostitutes and circus performers, and legendary chefs who collectively advanced the Civil Rights movement, restored horse racing in the city, and (for better or worse) introduced the turducken to the U.S. The tour takes an 1:15 and is under a mile. Sally is passionate about revealing New Orleans' unusual, outrageous, and untold stories, believing history isn’t about merely listing dates and facts, but the gentle collision of truth and narrative – scandals and all!

St. Louis Cemetery No. 3
Local author and historian Sally Asher will take you on a journey of a famous New Orleans cemetery. It’s been written that St. Louis Cemetery #3 has so many angels that one can “almost hear the beat of their wings.” You'll visit the graves and learn about some of the city's notable (and notorious) citizens including the first businesswoman to have a public statute erected in her honor, the hunchbacked photographer who secretly photographed prostitutes, the woman behind the quirky castle, the famed architect whose ship went down in a hurricane with over a hundred prostitutes and circus performers, and some legendary chefs who collectively advanced the Civil Rights movement, restored horse racing in New Orleans, and (for better or worse) introduced the turducken to the U.S.. This tour takes approximately an hour and a half and covers roughly a half mile. The tour meets in front of the cemetery on 3421 Esplanade Ave at the gate farthest to the right underneath the trees.

I really loved the tour. It was informative and entertaining. The tombs were both haunting and historic - a must visit while in town. Sally’s well researched stories about the people buried there were fascinating. A must visit!

I live not far from this cemetery and see almost every tour when I’m walking my dog. Sally’s is the one I choose when my friends are in front out of town. She’s so personable and makes everyone on the tour feel like a local or a friend. Her stories aren’t just history facts, she includes details that make you feel like you’re on the sinking ship with the person memorialized there. She doesn’t leave out the juicy gossip of the past either! It’s the perfect length to feel like you learned a lot but still have time for the rest of your day. And I’m biased on this one, but it’s in the best neighborhood of New Orleans. You’ll get to see beautiful houses, unique local restaurants, city park, and more just by hanging out on Esplanade.

I really enjoyed this tour. It was a beautiful day to explore the fascinating above-ground cemeteries of New Orleans. My favorite stops where the Gallier tomb (sunken steamship) and the Galatoires tomb (famous Bourbon street restaurant). These is a lot of symbolism in these crypts. Sally is a local author and extremely passionate about history. The your was both fun and informative.
