We were duped. They caught us right after we got out of the south ferry subway station. We asked them if there was a cruise that would drop us off at the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island because that's what we drove all the way from Wisconsin for. They said yes but they were already fully booked and that we would have to be finger printed and ID'd on both islands(an officer later told us that this is illegal). They had another cruise that just drove us around the islands and the city skyline. They seemed legit so we just went with it.
We bought our "tickets"(in quotes because they weren't handprint or even digital. they just gave us a receipt of them) and they walked us to a shuttle bus that went to their boat. Keep in mind that there was another ferry service right in the area of the subway station but we couldn't see it due to trees being in the way. Once we got on the shuttle, the boat they had us go on was 15-20min away. When we got there, we had to wait 30min minutes for the boat. I also had to used the bathroom really bad at this time and the closest bathroom was a good walk away from the boat which sucked(I lost my sunglasses due to feeling rushed in the bathroom because of this).
It wasn't as bad when cruise actually started though considering we knew we weren't getting exactly what we wanted. The sights were very beautiful and the tour guide was very knowledgeable. However, there were a few inconvenient sensory things though related to the boat stability, the volume of the speakers in the boat, and how packed it was.
Once we got off the boat, it was a hot 45min wait for a shuttle bus that would take us back to the subway area. When we got back to the subway area, we started walking around and we saw this other ferry service. We were becoming skeptical of the cruise we just came from, so we went up a very kind NYPD officer and asked him about it. We pulled up the receipt we got(this is the first time we saw the price) and we paid a whopping $270usd!!
The officer said we shouldn't be paying that price for the experience we had, and he paid for us to get on the trip with the other ferry service that would get us to both islands(we didn't get to Ellis Island but it was late in the day so āŗļø). It was a much better experience: waiting was less, boat ride was more enjoyable, and we were actually able to see the Statue of Liberty up close this time. The name of this service is Statue Cruises, and if we chose this one first we only would've paid $125usd!!
If you want to save money and have a better experience, avoid this dishonest money-hungery company and go through Statue Cruises. Unlike this service, their port is in the same area as the South Ferry subway station. Especially avoid this company if you or someone your traveling with have sensory issues or a condition that come with sensory issues such as autism. Statue Cruises provides a much more accommodating sensory experience.
