Manhattan by Sail operates one of the absolute BEST excursions that you can experience when you're in New York. To be on a stunningly beautiful old tall ship with the sails up and seeing iconic sites up close from the water is truly spectacular!!! I can't recommend this trip enough. You will not be disappointed. We've taken every person who comes to visit on this trip and it's always been amazing!!!!

First, we were notified 1 hour prior to departure that the Clipper ship we booked on the east side of NYC was out of service, needed a new fuel pump. We were instructed to go to a different marina on the west side of Manhattan to board a schooner. (At some point, they should have acknowledged that this was an inconvenience, but that never happened) Sail time was supposed to be 3 pm. We were there last 3pm, but they crew was not ready. We watched as they chatted and flirted with each other, ignoring the guests standing fifty feet away.. We watched 2 crew members smoke cigarettes and toss the butts in the in the marina. It was gross, and I think, illegal in NYC. It was a lesson for our 4 young boys on how NOT to behave. At 3:20 they commenced boarding. The boat was overcrowded and 3 of our party members had to sit on the deck. They gave us a broken life preserver for one of our children. They didn't offer any beverages to the children. It's was not family friendly! The only time the lead speaker got animated was when she asked for tips at the end. They did the least amount possible. This is the first time we have been so disappointed by Viator's contractors. We always trusted Viator but if this is the new standard, we won't be so loyal in the future. We had a late start and ended early. Viator puts its reputation at risk with vendors like this motley crew.

What an absolute shambles. I was so looking forward to sailing on a tall ship on my birthday. Received an email 1 hour before to cancel the cruise. We were already at the pier. No sign of the ship. Cancelled due to ā€˜technical difficulties’. The two guys sent to represent the company were useless and kept saying they had no idea why/what to do etc. ā€˜we don’t know what’s going on either’ was what they said!! We booked online using a Go City pass and were offered to rebook on another day. (And they couldn’t help with that either) No good when you have a packed itinerary as you do when visiting NY!! People that had booked & paid by card had been rebooked onto the Sheerwater boat but that’s the other side of downtown Manhattan. Not awfully convenient for them and a ā€˜tough luck’ attitude for people like us using a pass. Something feels off re the cancelled trip. Seems more like lack of demand excuse or staffing etc. also felt like a huge scam. The two guys were also overheard by me to say ā€˜I had a feeling we weren’t going to be working today’ . So this isn’t a one-off. I also didn’t appreciate being told not to use trains due to terrorism threats which are unsubstantiated. I really don’t care that he chose to bike to work because of this. Don’t deflect the problem of the cancelled cruise into a sympathy plea. Reading recent reviews this seems to be a theme so just be prepared for a disappointment. Zero customer service and a ā€˜don’t blame me’ attitude from their crew representative.
