I read wonderful reviews and decided to book our Ketchikan excursion with Southeast Sea Kayaks. I initially booked the Orcas Cove 4 hour kayak excursion. When our cruise ship arrived, the weather was cold, rainy, windy, and the water swells were 2-3 feet. Not ideal kayaking conditions for a first-timer. Kaylee our guide and instructor told us it was too windy to do the Orcas Cove excursion and suggested kayaking along the city bay to the island across the port (?Snow Island). We said "sure! Let's do it!". Kaylee got us geared up and gave us a 10 minute lesson on Kayaking 101. My husband and I were a bit worried since we're not great swimmers and the waters were so choppy. Twenty minutes into kayaking, we were both exhausted and having second thoughts. It seemed as though we were the only crazy people kayaking today in this ominous weather. But as soon as we reached the Island, Kaylee pointed out 15 bald eagles perched up on the tree tops. We were awed. Kaylee was so sweet and taught us about Ketchikan's rain forest and natural plant and wildlife. We must have bumped her kayak 20 times. When we were done, we were tired and cold but delighted. Also we were grateful for having such a great guide and instructor who got us back to land safely. When our cruise ship was ready to leave the port, the rain clouds passed and the sun came out. How funny!?

Nine of us, ranging in age from 14 to 60, booked the four-hour Orcas Cove kayaking trip. We met our guide close to the ship, and she drove us to their store so we could store a few belongings (if we wanted, you could also leave them on the boat that took you to the cove). Once we arrived at the kayaking desination, we were given some instructions. The water is very calm (at least it was on our trip). If you're used to kayaking, it's like smooth lake kayaking, not wavy sea kayaking. We had one member who was concerned about it being too strenuous, and it wasn't for her. The kayaks are two-person, so you can pair up abilities. You don't have to travel far to see all sorts of wildlife - 18 leg starfish, a mink, eagles, and a seal swimming under our kayaks were some of the highlights on our trip. After kayaking, we enjoyed a large snack of smoked salmon with all the accoutrements, and the food was outstanding (and I don't even like smoked salmon). We all agreed - this was our favorite Alaska activity during our two-week trip. Thanks for making it memorable!
