Iām a bit of a ghost tour junkie- not because I think I might see a ghost (although isnāt that hope kinda there?) but because I enjoy hearing the more colourful side of a cityās history in an engaging and sometimes over the top way.
This tourās stories are great- Portland has a past worth hearing about. Our tour guide (He didnāt tell us his name although my husband said he got a text from him so perhaps he said it there?) was young and earnest and reminding me a little of my son. He was new to the tour and still learning which is no biggie- we all have to learn new jobs. One of the first things he said to me once he learned we were Canadian was that he had a nice couple from Canada on a previous tour who tipped him two dollars Canadian and he had no idea what to do about that.
He took us to the stops and spoke engagingly about the stories and although he tripped over the stories only a couple times I think he did well. He did reference forgetting the script a couple times which took me out of the experience more than his stumbles.
At one stop he said he had a psychic tell him they we sure it was a ghost that they felt when touching the ground above a mass First Nation grave and his tone and expression suggested scorn for that person and he said he wondered why a psychic would even go on the tour. He also asked at another point if we (there were three of us on the tour) believed in ghosts and I said I had never seen one but donāt disbelieve. He said sorta the same- that people can believe what they want to.
One other time as we were walking the longest stretch of sidewalk between stops he said that some people walk so slowly that this stretch can be almost painful.
He did add some info- stories of friends who had worked in the establishments that added great colour- and encouraged us to explore when we could that was great.
Overall I think the tour script is good and the history can be conveyed well. I think our guide will improve with time (like we all do with jobs we learn). He did have great energy and some wonderful flair.
Regarding the less than feel good experiences he spoke of- poor Canadian tip, the eye roll re the psychic, the slow walkers and the semi-ambivalent beliefs towards ghosts and the paranormal etc: my advice would be to embrace some inner showman and pretend to believe more in the ghostly side of life (if continuing to guiding a ghost tour) and find someone outside of work to share your frustrations with. I felt like I was watching a play (this is about entertainment AND history) where I was able to occasionally see behind the scenes which pulled me out of the experience and left me wanting.
All this being said I do want to say: You got this, Mr Tour Guide! Keep up that wonderful energy!
I hope this review will be taken in the way it was meant- constructive feedback. I would have stayed and offered verbal feedback but was weirdly concerned over my tip choice even though it was over 20% AND American money.
I had a Twoonie (Canadian $2 coin) in my pocket which did make me smile. What CAN you do with that in America????? Confound a tour guide I guess! :)
