Stephens Passage is a beautiful area in its own right and when you see a pod of young Orcas feeding the surface, it doesn't get much better (it did though, humpbacks and sea lions as well). This was a large boat with two levels, topside is great if you can be there. The Needle Falls is a mile hike to the beach but worth the effort, Mendenhall Glacier is an amazing sight, with ice flows on the lake, a great river of ice receding into the background. We saw a beaver dam (alas no beavers) and three bear cubs in a distant tree (bring binoculars). We saw a porcupine feeding in the tree tops, Stellar Jays in the brush and many other birds as well as Bald Eagles. It is a relatively easy walk (my wife is disabled, but she did the paved path fairly easily). NOT TO BE MISSED.
Our return driver Archie was a homespun comedian. He obviously loves his work. He is full of great information, but he delivers it in a fun way. You get the indigenous Alaskan viewpoint. We thoroughly enjoyed this adventure.
