We took the whale watching and glacier comb tour. We saw whales within 5 minutes of pulling out the dock. Zoey was a great naturalist and was really friendly. Our boat captain was a great whale finder. He found at least 5 different locations that had whales. In addition to the whales we had a great view of the surrounding mountains including the Mendenhall Glacier.
We rode on one of the larger boats and I am glad we were on a larger boat. We had more people on the boat but the larger boat provided a nicer ride and gave more space to move around during the whale watching. You probably wonāt see any whales coming out the water, was told that is pretty rare but we saw lots of tails and backs, with a few heads.
I really enjoyed Mendenhall Glacier. You can see it pretty much the second you step off the shuttle bus. There is a viewing area in the parking lot but the very short easy walk to the glacier viewing area is well worth it. The trail is just past the visitor center. The visitor center also gives great views of the glacier.
At the same starting point for the glacier viewing area is the Nugget Falls trail. It is an impressive water fall that you can get right to the base of fall. It is an easy to travel trail and will take about and hour round trip. The water fall is the star, you get a better glacier view from the shorter glacier viewing trail, about a 15 minutes round trip.
The tour is exactly as described. You can stay at the glacier until the last shuttle bus leaves which was 6:30 on the day we were there. We took the 1:30 tour from Juneau, was on the whale boat around 2, two hours on the boat which was a perfect time on the water, got to the glacier about 4:30 and was ready to go back around 5:45.
When you want to head back skip the first bus stop where you get dropped off and go to the second one. It is less chaotic because lots of tour buses pickup at the first one.
