My wife and I took this tour on the one day we had in Juneau during our cruise. The truth is, based on the brochures and reviews, I had expected a LOT more.
During the whale watch, the boat's captain was not especially aggressive in getting us close to the whales. We always seemed to be at a distance, with one or two other boats positioning themselves between our boats and the whales. We were left to use our 300mm lenses to get even half-decent pictures of the whales. Our videos were frequently interrupted by other boats with more 'aggressive' captains, who always seemed to be getting in our way. I guess your level of satisfaction with the whale watch would be directly in correlation to the aggressiveness of your boat's captain.
The Mendenhall Glacier portion of the trip was equally underwhelming. The tour does NOT get patrons close to the glacier or Nugget Falls. Again, we were left to use our 300mm lenses to get even half-decent photos.
While it was a decent trip I was left tremendously disappointed. Others reviews have applauded the tour. Sadly, I cannot. As I said, above, your enjoyment may be directly related to which captain is in charge of your boat.
As far as the glacier portion of the trip, I commend the reader to find a tour that takes you out to Nugget Falls - to get a great view of the falls and a tremendously improved view of the glacier. For me, THAT would have made up for the disappointment from the whale watch.
Good luck, folks...
