My wife and I took this tour on the one day we had in Juneau during our cruise. The truth is, based on the brochures and reviews, I had expected a LOT more. During the whale watch, the boat's captain was not especially aggressive in getting us close to the whales. We always seemed to be at a distance, with one or two other boats positioning themselves between our boats and the whales. We were left to use our 300mm lenses to get even half-decent pictures of the whales. Our videos were frequently interrupted by other boats with more 'aggressive' captains, who always seemed to be getting in our way. I guess your level of satisfaction with the whale watch would be directly in correlation to the aggressiveness of your boat's captain. The Mendenhall Glacier portion of the trip was equally underwhelming. The tour does NOT get patrons close to the glacier or Nugget Falls. Again, we were left to use our 300mm lenses to get even half-decent photos. While it was a decent trip I was left tremendously disappointed. Others reviews have applauded the tour. Sadly, I cannot. As I said, above, your enjoyment may be directly related to which captain is in charge of your boat. As far as the glacier portion of the trip, I commend the reader to find a tour that takes you out to Nugget Falls - to get a great view of the falls and a tremendously improved view of the glacier. For me, THAT would have made up for the disappointment from the whale watch. Good luck, folks...

We had a wonderful time and greatly enjoyed the knowledgable captain and guide. Along the way, we saw 6-8 different humpbacks, each visible multiple times surfacing all around our boats. The captain did a great job getting us close, but never interfering with the whales.

We had the most incredible experience whale watching. We saw our first whale within 10 minutes of leaving. It was super exciting. Then we journeyed quite a bit farther and came to an area where there were a few other boats. We saw one whale coming up for breath and then spotted another one shortly after. We got some great photos of their tails and then they disappeared. I was standing on the top left side of the boat when I heard a noise, which turned out to whale spray directly below me. There were 4 whales right below me, so close to the boat that they were practically touching it. Somehow I came to my senses and starting filming them. It's not the best video I ever shot, but I did manage to get the whales and it's fun to listen to everyone screaming and yelling including the guides. The whales were 3 adults and a baby. We saw the tails of the mom and baby almost in tandem. They stayed pretty close for awhile before they swam away. We then saw a lone whale swimming along the side of our boat and watched it for a long time. That whale breached He came totally out of the water and landed on his back. What a sight! Shout out to our amazing guides, Russell, Jessie and Lukas! They were great and as excited as we we're. Its extremely rare to see more than one whale together and they seldom see them breach. Add to that the extreme closeness of them to our boat. Our captain Jordan took us to the best sites imaginable. Highlight of my trip and a whale watching excursion that probably will never be topped!! I also need to mention the Mendenhall Glacier trip. It's beautiful to see and well worth the easy walk to Nugget Falls. We walked back on the beach which isn't maintained, but only had a couple of semi difficult spots where you walked on rocks to get over the water. We saw an iceberg close to shore and some smaller chunks of ice that had washed ashore. Overall, I would highly recommend Glacier Tours.
