Presidio Walk to the Golden Gate Bridge

Overview
On our walking tour of the Presidio (including Tunnel Tops!) JB Walking Tours takes you through history, not the boring history you learned in school, but with the sordid stories they never told you! A famous photographer who was also a murderer and an actress who was a Union spy are just a few of our stories. We'll discover Yoda and how Lucasfilm came to be a part of the Presidio.
Note: Tour starts at one location and ends at another

We'll show you "then and now" photos of the park and tell stories of the soldiers and civilians that lived here as well as some who are buried here. On the main post, we’ll chat about what life was like for soldiers who lived here and discover the tragic, fiery fate that befell a very famous Army general.

Many tours drive in a rush through the Presidio on their way to the bridge... our tour slows down to walk, and shows you what you're missing!! Your guide is a resident of the Presidio with lots of information to share on the way to the Golden Gate!

What To Expect
1
Presidio
We start at the Lombard & Lyon street entrance to The Presidio, and stroll through the Letterman District (Lucasfilm ). Of course, there will be plenty of opportunities for pictures! We'll walk through several historic neighborhoods, viewing the changing landscape as we learn about the history of The Presidio and it's future projects. On the main post, we’ll hear stories about what life was like for officers and enlisted soldiers who lived here. Then, it’s onto the Presidio Officers' Club, one of the oldest buildings in San Francisco. At the National Cemetery, we’ll hear curious stories of some of the people buried here, and take in a spectacular view of the bay from the overlook where we will eat our own lunches & snacks. After a break we'll continue our walk past historic Cavalry stables where the famous Buffalo Soldiers once camped, and check out the Pilot's Row historic neighborhood as we continue our walk to the Golden Gate Bridge!
2
Yoda fountain
We'll pay homage to Yoda and walk through the Lucasfilm outdoor campus (the former Letterman Hospital District)
3
Presidio Officers’ Club
The Officers' Club is one of San Francisco's most historic buildings. We will stop outside the club and learn about it's history, it's cannons and hear about it's legendary love story...
4
Pershing Square
A stop here will give us a story of General John Pershing and his family, as well as explore 2 more bronze cannons.
5
San Francisco National Cemetery
We quietly walk the cemetery and learn it's history as well as stories of some of it's residents. A Union Spy, Buffalo Soldiers and a local Marin Olympic hero are just some of the wonderful citizens buried here. We’ll walk a pretty good climb up to the Cemetery Overlook for spectacular views and a chance for you to get that perfect Instagram photo.
6
Golden Gate Bridge Welcome Center
We’ll stop at several great spots for photos of this iconic bridge and tell you the stories of Joseph Strauss, AP Giannini and Charles Ellis, the less famous engineer of the Golden Gate Bridge. From here we bid you goodbye so you can continue your walk onto the bridge!

During COVID, this was a wonderful way to spend time with others. I went as part of a work team-building exercise and it was so much fun. Social distancing was enforced, and everyone (including Julie the tour guide) wore a mask. We were all locals and yet the history was fascinating! It covered everything from Ohlone times through the world wars and even included some (very) contemporary history about Lucasarts/Disney's complex in the Presidio. Don't miss the spooky bits about the old military hospital, as well as the statue of a photographer of much infamy. As a dog person, walking through the pet cemetery was surprisingly poignant. And then, of course, seeing the Golden Gate Bridge up close and learning about how it was built and how it got its iconic color... unforgettable!

I have lived in San Francisco for 11 years, and didn't really know much history about the Golden Gate Bride and the Presidio. This was an amazing tour experience and I learned so much interesting information about two of San Francisco's landmarks. Julie is so knowledgeable, personable and fun which definitely added a lot to the experience! I highly recommend this tour!
