Presidio Walk to the Golden Gate Bridge

Overview
On our walking tour of the Presidio (including Tunnel Tops!) JB Walking Tours takes you through history, not the boring history you learned in school, but with the sordid stories they never told you! A famous photographer who was also a murderer and an actress who was a Union spy are just a few of our stories. We'll discover Yoda and how Lucasfilm came to be a part of the Presidio.
Note: Tour starts at one location and ends at another

We'll show you "then and now" photos of the park and tell stories of the soldiers and civilians that lived here as well as some who are buried here. On the main post, we’ll chat about what life was like for soldiers who lived here and discover the tragic, fiery fate that befell a very famous Army general.

Many tours drive in a rush through the Presidio on their way to the bridge... our tour slows down to walk, and shows you what you're missing!! Your guide is a resident of the Presidio with lots of information to share on the way to the Golden Gate!

What To Expect
1
Presidio
We start at the Lombard & Lyon street entrance to The Presidio, and stroll through the Letterman District (Lucasfilm ). Of course, there will be plenty of opportunities for pictures! We'll walk through several historic neighborhoods, viewing the changing landscape as we learn about the history of The Presidio and it's future projects. On the main post, we’ll hear stories about what life was like for officers and enlisted soldiers who lived here. Then, it’s onto the Presidio Officers' Club, one of the oldest buildings in San Francisco. At the National Cemetery, we’ll hear curious stories of some of the people buried here, and take in a spectacular view of the bay from the overlook where we will eat our own lunches & snacks. After a break we'll continue our walk past historic Cavalry stables where the famous Buffalo Soldiers once camped, and check out the Pilot's Row historic neighborhood as we continue our walk to the Golden Gate Bridge!
2
Yoda fountain
We'll pay homage to Yoda and walk through the Lucasfilm outdoor campus (the former Letterman Hospital District)
3
Presidio Officers’ Club
The Officers' Club is one of San Francisco's most historic buildings. We will stop outside the club and learn about it's history, it's cannons and hear about it's legendary love story...
4
Pershing Square
A stop here will give us a story of General John Pershing and his family, as well as explore 2 more bronze cannons.
5
San Francisco National Cemetery
We quietly walk the cemetery and learn it's history as well as stories of some of it's residents. A Union Spy, Buffalo Soldiers and a local Marin Olympic hero are just some of the wonderful citizens buried here. We’ll walk a pretty good climb up to the Cemetery Overlook for spectacular views and a chance for you to get that perfect Instagram photo.
6
Golden Gate Bridge Welcome Center
We’ll stop at several great spots for photos of this iconic bridge and tell you the stories of Joseph Strauss, AP Giannini and Charles Ellis, the less famous engineer of the Golden Gate Bridge. From here we bid you goodbye so you can continue your walk onto the bridge!

I was already pretty familiar with the Presidio Park in San Francisco, but thought I would give this tour a try. Especially right now with Covid and museums being closed, I'd rather find activities to do outside. And I am so glad I did! I saw and learned so much more about the Presidio Park, and of course the views are always breathtaking. Julie had some great stories about some of the people who lived and worked in the Presidio while it was an army base. And she had a tablet loaded with historical pictures taken from the exact places we walked along the tour so we could compare before and afters. Who knew there was a pet cemetery in the park?! And I just love the view of the Golden Gate Park. The tour has some rolling hills but I didn't find it too strenuous and we were on sidewalks most of the time, with one or two dirt paths. Bring a sandwich or a snack and some water, especially if it's a hot day.

From the moment we met Julie at the entrance, we felt at ease & completely comfortable with her. We laughed & had a great time all while she did an amazing job educating us.

Such a fun and educational experience all while getting a great walk in. Julie is so knowledgeable and funny. My favorite parts were at Lucas Films and seeing an old earthquake shack. The view of the Golden Gate Bridge was also very beautiful. I highly recommend this tour.

Thanks Elena! It was great having you and your cousins on the walk! (oh and for anyone wondering... for the record, we did all have masks on during the walk except for the 3 seconds it took to take this photo, and we really did hold our breaths!!) thanks again, see you soon!
