Overview

Desert Highlights is Moab's original canyoneering guide service. This full day canyoneering tour visits a route that Desert Highlights' founder created as a technical guided canyoneering route in the late 1990's. Here, we explore an area that most people would not visit on their own. With the use of ropes and other technical gear, a competent guide and a sense of adventure, we are able to explore areas that are otherwise inaccessible. The Moab desert is our home and we are passionate about sharing it with others. During your guided tour, you will not only safely descend a beautiful, water-carved canyon, but you will learn about the flora and fauna, geology and history of the area that we are so lucky to call our backyard.

I had been interested in canyoneering for a while, so I finally decided to surprise my husband with a quick trip to Moab and do the full-day excursion down by Hanksville in a couple canyons. It exceeded my expectations and was one of the coolest and most fun adventures I've ever had! First off, I had a ton of questions, especially about which canyon would be the very best for what was most important to me (lots of downclimbing vs bigger rappels, etc) and we did end up switching places due to their recommendation. I felt like they truly considered everything I had to say, and they were patient and had great answers to all my questions. Secondly, our guide, Kai, was super awesome! She was so fun, made everything a breeze, but we had complete confidence in her competency in every situation. There was one spot in the canyon that had changed since last summer when she'd been through, and she carefully considered everything and made a new plan that we trusted and were comfortable with. But mostly, we just had a blast together! It was awesome scrambling through the canyon, and we enjoyed all the hours talking to her. My husband particularly enjoyed talking motorcycle's with her. 😂 We would absolutely recommend this company, with zero reservations!!

What a fantastic experience! This day trip ranks as one of the best tours we have done in ten years of traveling across all seven continents! It started with an e-mail from Melissa explaining our options in detail so that we could choose which canyon we were going to do. We chose Leprechaun Canyon and our guide was Kai. My husband and I were the only people on this tour, because all of the company's tours are PRIVATE! My husband and I are in our 50's and are very fit with only one experience rappelling but have never been canyoneering. I'm a bit of a nervous adventurer due to some prior injuries but love to challenge my abilities and limits. Kai was excellent about thinking of ways to get around obstacles when I couldn't get around them in the usual way and also great encouraging me when I felt like some of the downclimbs were too scary/tough. She was great offering advice in a helpful way and made us feel safe about all the challenges in the canyon. Our first experience canyoneering was so fun and we came out of the canyon feeling accomplished and ready to do it all again. Leprechaun canyon was pretty narrow most of the way with some very beautiful spots that satisfied my husband's love for photography. Melissa's recommendation was spot on! I highly recommend this adventure and company. A must do if you are in Moab.

Spectacular views and an exhilarating experience! This is a must-do in Moab! My husband and I did the full day canyoneering tour in Granary Canyon. Our guide Jake was superb! He was very friendly, knowledgeable and informative. Most of all he was very supportive and patient. This was helpful because I’m very fearful of heights and he gave me the confidence to power through the scary parts of the tour ( the exposure areas). If you want to be right in the middle of nature, this is it. It was so peaceful in that canyon. We didn’t run into anyone during the hike. We saw many beautiful arches, canyon views, granaries and of course rock formations. It took us about 9 hours to do the tour, not including the van ride there and back. The 6 rappels were fun! I do recommend to have a little experience in rappelling if you are afraid of heights. (We have rappelled about 3 times before.) The 200 foot rappel can be daunting if you are afraid of heights and are new to it. Desert Highlights have other tour options to fit your needs. The owners are very friendly too. We had to reschedule our booking and Melissa easily accommodated us. I definitely recommend using this company for canyoneering! Thanks again Jake for giving us a spectacular day!
