Private Buckskin Gulch Tour

Overview
There are as many metaphors to describe what locals call 'down in the Buckskin' as there are people who have been there. I choose the word 'in' because you are literally inside the walls of the world's longest slot canyon.

According to the Bureau of Land Management ('BLM') website, Buckskin Gulch is 16 miles long (around 26 km) from the Buckskin Trailhead to the Paria Canyon and over 500 feet (around 150m) deep at its confluence with the Paria River. There are places in the Buckskin where you are able to touch both canyon walls at the same time.

Buckskin Gulch is a photographer's and hiker's Mecca. Every corner you turn is changing continuously; the cliffs are water-and-wind-sculpted patterns of colors, light and shadows. You may also marvel and puzzle at the meanings of the rock writings (petroglyphs) from the early Archaic period (some are as old as 9,000 years).

It was voted one the top 10 hikes in the world by National Geographic Adventure Magazine a few years back.

This adventure was the highlight of my trip. I don't think I could have asked for a better guide and with my fear "respect" of heights, I don't think I would ever have gone down into the gulch without him. There were so many things that made this a special and unique adventure for me. I really want to thank Yermo for not only guiding me on the hike, but for the conversation, as my mother passed away less than a week before my trip and Yermo said some things to me that helped me to deal with my grief. This is a rather personal review, but besides being very knowledgeable of the area, showing me everything and explaining everything, he took the time to listen to me and share his experience with what I was going through. Yermo really is the best guide and also a pretty great person. I would highly recommend him as a guide and the gulch is beautiful. I hope to get over that way again and when I do, I will book another hike with Yermo.

It's not often in life that you are able to have a guided tour by someone who is truly an expert in his field -- and Yermo is truly an expert when it comes to the Southwestern United States, Native American Archaeology, desert hiking and the Buckskin Gulch. He made this a truly magical day for our family, and he ensured that we were safe and comfortable throughout the experience. Just listening to Yermo as he shows you petroglyphs, Native American pottery, desert plant life and the beauty of the canyon is worth the price of admission.
