After experiencing other fishing charters on the Big Island, California, and the Caribbean, this one was beyond disappointing. Catching fish is never a guarantee, we understand that because we have a boat and we fish, but when the crew never switched baits for 4 hours of trolling and laid down in the salon the whole way back from captain cook (2 hours), it showed a lack of care and a total lack of effort. We spoke with other charters after this experience who said they switch baits along the way (this time of year only artificials), at least trying to catch something! Also, the boat, Ichiban, was in bad shape with black smoke spewing the whole time and an engine that was obviously and admittedly struggling. The deck and hull needs some attention too. We paid $875 for a snorkel trip to captain cook. When you never switch baits and have a crew that doesnā€™t engage or try, it feels like a slow moving snorkel trip with no shade, no music, and no fun water toys. The owner doesnā€™t even live on the island and it seems like he doesnā€™t care about his boat on the Big Island. lesson learned, before booking any other fishing trips, donā€™t just go by the reviews, call and speak with the owner/captain and ensure theyā€™re experienced and customer service oriented.
