First stop will be a historical Japanese garden and a famous group of trees planted by some well-known names. Next will be a breathtaking 80ft waterfall and a lava tube then off we go to the summit of Kilauea at Volcanoes National Park, the most visited volcanic area on Earth. The park highlights the two most active volcanoes in the world, Mauna Loa and Kilauea. At the park you will stop at the Visitor Center, steam vents Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is the must see in Hawaii! Have lunch or coffee while looking at the famous Halemaumau crater!

The last stop is a black sand beach where turtles often like to nap!

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

Get the most out of your visit to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, a World UNESCO Heritage Site. To see most of the major sites in HVNP takes 3-4 hours not counting a stop for lunch. You will see: calderas, pit craters, lava trees, lava river, fissures, splatter ramparts, steam vents, lava tube and more. If you would prefer to see less of the Park and visit other stops along the way to the Park you are welcome to do so.

Nahuku - Thurston Lava Tube

With us you will actually learn how the lava tube formed and see some of the interesting remnants from the previous lava flows.

This was by far our favorite day. Even though the weather was not cooperating Rob and Jodi found a way to make it work. We all loved the tour and Rob accommodated all of our requests (even stopping at Target on the way back to the ship for a curling iron purchase). You won't see that on all your excursions! That's why it pays to go private. It was very comfortable in the van and everything was provided and we did need umbrellas for part of the day. My only regret is that they are not available on all the islands! I've never had such great communication on any trip. So don't hesitate to book them if you get a chance.

After having our cruise line excursion canceled, we decided to find a private tour. A quick Google search provided Big Island VIP.com. Jodi provided a private tour in an 11-passenger van just for our group of 6. The tour runs 8 am to 2 pm and the price includes her photography. We had a full day and saw many things that most tours and people just drive by. She has an extensive knowledge of Hilo and Volcano National Park. She tailors the tour to the interest/needs of her clients. This is one of the very best tours we have ever been on. BigIslandVIP.com is highly recommended. We will be back!
