Privateer Schooner Sailing Tour in Salem Sound

Overview
FAME is annually the #1-rated boat in Salem and one of the top-rated activities in the entire town, per TripAdvisor. Don't miss the very best of what Salem has to offer! There's more to our town than witches!

FAME is a full-scale replica of a privateer schooner from the War of 1812 that captured over 20 prizes! We sail up to five times a day between May and October from Pickering Wharf Marina in downtown Salem.

On board our traditional gaff-rigged schooner, you'll get a chance to raise the sails and even steer the boat as we sail Salem Sound and talk about the fisherman, traders, and privateers that played such a central role in the saga of Salem, of Massachusetts, and of the young United States.

This is a great hands-on adventure for all ages — but you can also just sit back and enjoy a beverage and take it all in as we cruise past the historic forts and lighthouses of Salem, Beverly, and Marblehead.

There are two kinds of boat people in the world. Power and Sail. Fame is a beautiful replica of the Salem sailing ship of the same name. If you like sailboats, you will love it. Personally, I am a power boat guy and prefer the old fashion booze cruise with some tunes, an engine and a little more speed.

I couldn't have more praise for today's outing on the schooner Fame out of Salem MA. We booked the outing the night before, but when we arrived at the dock the next day, we found out we were the only passengers to have booked the trip and it might not do the 4pm sail. But, the captain said yes and were were on our way. We had three sailors on board who told us really interesting information about the history of Fame and about the area. The sail had differing degrees of wind and I learned how to keep as much sail as possible open to the wind. There are drinks and snacks on board. I've been on several sails from different ports, but this one is my clear favorite. If you go to Salem, trust us, this is the way to relax.

The FAME is a gorgeous example of a privateer. Captain Rutstein gave an informative tour and talked about the Star Spangled Banner and how privateers were used during the War of 1812. We had an almost two hour sailing trip and got to raise the sails and operate the tiller. The Captain was at ease talking about schooners and sailing and also history. Great fun!
