Privateer Schooner Sailing Tour in Salem Sound

Overview
FAME is annually the #1-rated boat in Salem and one of the top-rated activities in the entire town, per TripAdvisor. Don't miss the very best of what Salem has to offer! There's more to our town than witches!

FAME is a full-scale replica of a privateer schooner from the War of 1812 that captured over 20 prizes! We sail up to five times a day between May and October from Pickering Wharf Marina in downtown Salem.

On board our traditional gaff-rigged schooner, you'll get a chance to raise the sails and even steer the boat as we sail Salem Sound and talk about the fisherman, traders, and privateers that played such a central role in the saga of Salem, of Massachusetts, and of the young United States.

This is a great hands-on adventure for all ages — but you can also just sit back and enjoy a beverage and take it all in as we cruise past the historic forts and lighthouses of Salem, Beverly, and Marblehead.

Luckily we had a Groupon for one of the fares for the Schooner Fame. I would give this a B-.Kids on the Schooner were bored to death, even though a couple of them did get to steer for a bit. Being a Salem resident, I guess I expected more. We went out into the harbor and circled 3 or 4 times. Stayed stagnant to eat up remainder of time until heading back to the dock. We did not venture beyond the harbor which was a bit dissapointing. While the crew was pleasant the Captain did speak sharply and demeaning to one of the crew which bothered us.

This is a nice and relaxing 2-hour tour of the Salem Harbor. It's on an old historic and picturesque sailing vessel. They offer cold beverages (i.e. beer, soda, water) to make the trip that more enjoyable. I'm not sure if kids would find it as interesting, but as an adult I appreciated a cold beer, as we sailed about the harbor learning a little history and giving me an opportunity to chat with my friends in such a scenic setting. If time allows, do NOT purchase these tickets at the gate. Groupon often has the Schooner Fame for $18 as opposed to the $30 price at the gate.

When in Salem you should do the witch stuff,it's fun, but their is so much more to do and see.Consider taking sail with the famous schooner Fame. The cost is reasonable for a beautiful two hour tour of the Salem harbor. The captain and his crew give you the history of this 1812 replica schooner and they make it interesting and fun. Helping is fun as well, if you so desire you can help raise the sails or take a turn at the helm! The weather in this area can be tricky so you might want to take a light jacket and hat along, we went out on a gorgeous day and still managed to encounter a small rain shower. If your looking for something different to do you can't miss the Fame.
