Overview

This is a small group rafting and scenic driving tour through the famous Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve with a scenic float trip (no whitewater) through the home of the largest bald eagle congregation in the world. Thousands of bald eagles travel here to feed on salmon in the fall and winter. In spring and summer watch for eagles nesting and raising their young.

Our family of 3 (including an almost 14-year-old) had a fabulous time in Haines and on the river. Nate was a terrific guide on the water, fun, friendly and knowledgeable about the area, and Carolyn was an incredible ambassador for Haines - we are tempted to return to Alaska just to hang out there for awhile. Beautiful setting, including the sights and sounds of eagles, and a juvenile coastal brown bear. Our favorite excursion during a seven day cruise!

Both our driver, Byrne, from Haines and our rafting guide (Lisa, I think) were very knowledgeable about the area and about the wildlife we were observing. Unfortunately it was cold and windy that afternoon but our guide had a bag full of mittens to keep us warm. We saw several species of birds including eagles, all identified by the guide. The area is beautiful!

We took this tour as part of our land/cruise adventure. Had a great time. We were met in Haines and driven by Byrne to the Chilkoot River where we met our raft guide, Nate, who did an excellent job of getting us down the river. The view was beautiful and we even got to see Arctic Terns.
