Breweries now number in the thousands and if you look around, there is likely one within an hour’s drive or less from where you live. But some breweries are more unique and deserve a visit for that reason alone. A good example is Ranger Creek Brewing and Distilling in San Antonio.
What sets this brewery apart from the others should be obvious when you read the name: It brews beer and it also distills its own whiskey, one of a small but growing number of operations that does both. The tour covers both ends of the operaton and it begins and ends in the tasting room where you can sample some of the beer and whiskey. You want to try both, as everything served here has its own unique appeal.
The owners/employees at Ranger Creek present a very informative tour and explain how their operation functions. They start with the brewery side and then lead you to the distillery and storage/aging area. It is interesting to learn what goes into the making of whiskey and I like how Ranger Creek combines elements of brewing and distilling when they formulate new products. Aging beer in whiskey barrels is growing in popularity and Ranger Creek has the distinct advantage of having its own whiskey barrels on hand. What you taste at Ranger Creek Brewing is distinct and perfected completely in- house, using its own equipment and materials.
Ranger Creek Brewing and Distilling is located in an industrial area in northeast San Antonio, very close to I-35. It’s an interesting place and easily worth a couple hours of your time. Pay a visit, learn more about brewing and distilling, and then relax in the tasting room and let the helpful guys at Ranger Creek take care of you.
