San Diego Whale Watching Tour

Overview
Our trips depart from Mission Bay, which requires only a short 10 minute journey access to the open ocean where whales and dolphins can be seen! The search for whales and other animals begins as soon as you depart the dock and our marine biologists are on the microphone explaining exactly what to expect and what you are seeing from the get go!
Typically our trips are 2.5-3 hours in length, but time can vary based on seasons and locations of sightings.

On a short weekend from Michigan, we knew it was a long shot to catch whales in November. We got skunked, but still saw sea lions, dolphins and Rizzos Dolphins. We had paid for a Thursday trip, which was cancelled due to a huge storm the day before. During our travel we missed the cancellation notice ....but Whale Watch San Diego honored our tickets for another day on our short trip, and we were still able to cruise with them another day. This was a great crew, great ride, and although we didn't see whales that day, I totally plan to go back and try again!

I have gone out with San Diego Whale Watch for years, often twice a year. Their marine biologist is knowledgeable but doesn’t talk the whole time. They are very concerned with safety and cleaning trash spotted in the ocean. We’ve tried most if not all of the companies. This is the best one. The only thing I would suggest is to get there early because checking in takes an unusually long time. There’s only one person and she’s chatty. We saw megapodes of dolphins on many trips. Once 400 dolphins surrounded our boat feeding for nearly an hour. We’ve seen California grey whales, humpback whales and blue whales, each in different seasons. It’s very pleasant on the water. An excellent activity for all ages.

Our entire family of 9 booked a morning whale watch cruise on Christmas Eve day. The Privateer crew was top notch. The crew welcomed us as we came aboard, they made it clear what to expect and they were helpful throughout the cruise. We did not see any whales ( probably a little early in the season ) but did see a ton of dolphins, seals and several species of sea birds. None of us were disappointed.
