Amazing! Now we know why it is listed as one of the top zoos in the world. Not only were there so many unique animals, but the zoo makes it a point to make your experience as wonderful as possible by providing food to the animals in optimal viewing spots-Iā€™ve taken the best, most close up photos of these amazing animals. The park is so clean, easily accessible, and so many snack stations and bathrooms are readily available. The staff is also so kind and eager to make your experience the best. I highly recommend taking the free trolly tour-gives you a broad idea of the park layout and some interesting information regarding the animals. This zoo is also a leader in research and conservation, so by buying tickets, you are also helping this effortā€¦ itā€™s a win/winā€¦ we will def be coming back! The safari was also amazing-we upgraded our experience which was def worth it-we took a safari truck to a large enclosure housing rhinos, giraffes, Gazelles, wildebeestļæ¼s, etc with no gate separating us-it was an up close encounter with amazing information from our tour guide. So if your time in SD is limited and you want to see both parks, I would recommend going to the zoo first (itā€™s def an all day event) and then going to the safari with an upgraded experience-many of the animals that were at the safari were also at the zoo. After our upgraded experience, we just picked a handful of animals we wanted to see so we ended up spending a half day at the safari. And FYI-the safari houses the only Platypus in a zoo in the world!

Great zoo, that you need at least 2 days to see everything. Lots of animals in interesting habitats and settings. Getting around is a bit of a challenge. The zoo map is difficult to follow, even for an experienced map user. You get a good workout, but itā€™s worth it. Food is a bit pricey, but good. If I lived in the area, Iā€™d become a member. The ā€œAnimals in Actionā€ special event is pricey ($104 per) but is worth every penny. Outstanding way to spend an hour with the animals and a very knowledgeable staff. My granddaughter and I got to see up close, feed, and pet a variety of animals large and small. We fed flamingos, and, yes, a rhino. We saw a cheetah and small leopard up close on a leash. We pet a zebra and a small marsupial about the size of a muskrat. In many ways, this zoo was like a theme park: I.e., Animal Kingdom at Disney World.

We went to the zoo on a Thursday in early June. We were there just a bit before the gates opened and the first hour we were there felt like our own private zoo. I studied the map before we went and I'm glad I did as there are so many trails and I wanted to avoid a lot of backtracking. I saw another review that said to stay to the right in the morning, which was great advice as the left side of the park has a lot more shade. We started up Treetops Way to see the orangutans and the aviary, then up to the Asian Passage and the Northern Frontier. The Elephant Odyssey and African Rocks. Looped down Center Street and at 10:55 we were hungry so we ate lunch at Sydney's Grill. The line started getting longer at about 11:00 so it was good timing for us. The we looked at the koalas and the walked the Urban Jungle loop. Still had some time to kill before Animals in Action at 1:00, so we walked over to the reptile and turtle exhibit and the hummingbirds and komodo dragons. Animals in Action was AWESOME! We saw a clouded leopard, a cheetah and another animal I don't remember the name of up close. We fed a rhino and flamingos and got to pet a zebra. Highly recommend! After that, we did the monkey trail, hippo trail and tiger trail. Left the park a little after 3. It was a lot of walking and was getting more crowded and hot as the day went on. I'm so glad we were there early in the morning. The volunteers in the red shirts are all so helpful and kind. We never rushed and took our time and had a great day!
