This sandhill crane kayak trip is a unique experience just out side Chattanooga, Tennessee that is only available from the seat of a kayak. It only happens for a brief period of the year and should be experienced by everyone. This is as close as you can get being on safari in Tennessee. The sounds of the sandhill cranes can be heard well before you ever see them. It has been compared to paddling through Jurassic Park.

We had a wonderful experience observing the migrating Sandhill Cranes at the Hiwassee Wildlife Refuge. While it was February and in the mid 40's, all of Zach's kit was suited to the weather. The neoprene kayak paddle gloves and extra rain jacket made what could have been a chilly experience very comfortable. Zach is a professional educator and a scientist, and an amateur ornithologist. His instructions expanded our kayaking techniques, and we learned so much about the Chattanooga areas natural resources and the sandhill crane's habitat and behaviors. It was a sunny day, ending with a magical sunset. And the post paddle hot cocoa made a warming end to the perfect afternoon.

I greatly enjoyed learning about the sandhill cranes and other birds at the Hiwassee Wildlife Refuge. Zach's clear instructions and friendliness help me quickly forget the below freezing temperature and the fact that it was my first time in a kayak.

This was our Valentine gift to each other (husband and wife adventure). We were beyond pleased with the excursion. Our guide was not only versed in the wildlife we were seeing but also considerate to our limitations, being seniors. We will be back next winter and plan to bring other friends along to enjoy this adventure.
