The Gothic-Revival chapel was inspired by Saint Chapelle in Paris, which was built by architect Antoine Mouly, who did the restoration of chapel that was patterned for King Louis IX in Paris. Legend has it that the 360-degree staircase built in the chapel between 1877 and 1881 had no visible means of support. Today, it is known as the Miraculous Staircase that St. Joseph the Carpenter had built. The Chapel was closed in 1968 and deconsecrated by the Catholic Church and is now run a privately owned museum.

Burro Alley
Burro Alley is a small street connecting Palace Avenue and San Francisco Street. During the 19th and early 20th centuries, vendors who sold salt from the Galisteo Salt Basin and firewood from surrounding mountains would tie up their burros there to rest. While the animals recuperated, the vendors would frequent the local saloons and brothels. The gambling hall that was run by MarĆa Gertrudis BarcelĆ³, known as DoƱa Tules, was at the corner near Palace Avenue.

A most excellent way to experience a place is to get to know its lore itā€™s history. Our tour with Ana was outstanding in depth and breadth. Honestly Iā€™d make this a required tour for anyone visiting Santa Fe if I could. Thank you Ana for a memorable experience and education.

We spent 3.5 hours with our tour guide, author Ana Pacheco, learning the history of Santa Fe from a very personal perspective. Anaā€™s family lived in Santa Fe for generations, and many streets and some buildings are named after her ancestors. Along with her very detailed narrative, Ana had numerous photos from the past that gave even more ā€œlifeā€ to the history she shared. We covered a lot of ground in a variety of weather conditions, from warm sunlight to heavy hail. Through it all, Ana didnā€™t miss a beat. Our group of 3 included my daughter, 16-yr-old granddaughter and me. (Grandma) . The tour was interesting to our 3 generations and involved Ana chauffeuring us around as well as some very moderate walking and climbing. It was the perfect combination of sitting and activity. This was my 4th trip to Santa Fe over the past 25 years, and I still learned many new things about this beautiful and artistic state capital. Thank you, Ana, for time well spent.
