Bonaventure Cemetery
During this 2.5 hour tour, you will be joining a very exclusive club of people who have seen the cemetery after it closes to the public. Not since it opened in 1846 has this been an opportunity, but thanks to your very special local host, now it is. You are literally locked in the cemetery the entire time; for the right taker, there's no price you can put on the joy of that. Imagine having the serenity, stillness, and quiet of the cemetery, uninterrupted by the living world. Stories stretch from the present day all the way back to Bonaventure's plantation beginnings in 1754. Our topics range from the funny and uplifting to the macabre at its most morbid. Some of the stories that will be covered include those of: • A "hooch runner" for Al Capone • A bizarre love story that ended in one murder and one visit to the electric chair • Savannah's role in The DaVinci Code • Lady Minerva & Jim Williams in Midnight in The Garden of Good and Evil

I've wanted to do Shannon's Scott's "after hours" tour of Bonaventure for a long time. This past Saturday my husband and I were able to spend a rainy evening, complete with thunder and lightening in the cemetery with Shannon. Shannon is a wonderful storyist, full of historical facts, as well as fun and humorists legends. It was evident that he knows and loves his history and his connections to Savannah residents, both living and dead. It never felt a like a typical "tour" and Shannon is not the typical tour guide. It felt more like taking a walk with a local historian. Bonaventure is beautiful cemetery, full of history and beautiful sculpture. Cemetery kindreds should not miss this tour while in Savannah, especially the "after hours" tour. I appreciated being able to feel free with my camera and wander behind or away from the group a bit as I shot pictures. I worried at first about the weather, but after entering the cemetery with umbrellas, rain, and thunder, and being privileged to see a large owl fly two times over us, well, could there be any better atmosphere for an evening cemetery tour?

Long weekend visit to Savannah and did all of the tours (Hop On/Off trolley, Old Savannah Experience Tour, hearse ghost tour) and all of our tour guides got progressively better. On our last full day there, we scheduled the After hours Bonaventure cemetery. It was here that we met Shannon, the tour guide and owner, and I must say, it was the most informative tour I have ever been on. He was so passionate with his storytelling and really humanized the person's life, i.e. Johnny Mercer and Tattnall.....loved their stories and how they got to be relevant. I loved it! Plus, the scenic cemetery and the surrounding water was magical.

I spent almost a whole day with Shannon in April, with for friends from Hong Kong and London. I love cemeteries and have wanted to tour Bonaventure ever since seeing the movie "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil". However I was concerned that in my zeal, I might have over-committed my friends (who are not cemetery geeks like me) in booking both a private half day tour starting early morning AND a private after hours visit. Shannon though, made the time fly, talking to us about the lives of some of the cemetery's famous "residents"' the symbolism of the tombstones as well as sharing his experiences with many of the characters in the Book. All five of us felt that the time was well spent. And being alone in the cemetery after closing was a wonderfully serene experience. Shannon recommended restaurants and many other activities to round out our time in the city. While he wasn't born in Savannah he clearly loves the City and Bonaventure particularly - he has bought his own plot here to assure his place in perpetuity - and he made a wonderful host.
