What To Expect

USS Midway Museum

MUSEUM HOURS 10:00 - 17:00 (LAST ENTRY AT 16:00)The USS Midway was the US Navy's longest serving carrier of the 20th century (1945-1992), and the largest ship in the world for a decade, housing 4,500 crew! Now you can walk in the footsteps of 225,000 sailors on a self-guided audio tour narrated by former Midway sailors and officers. USS Midway also contains interactive exhibits and climb-aboard aircraft for all ages. Don't miss the flight simulators, gift shop and cafe. Experience what it was like to be part of a "city at sea", explore galleys, officer's country, sleeping quarters and the engine room of the first Navy ship too large for the Panama Canal! You will be amazed by the 4-acre flight deck and the 360-degree panoramic view of downtown San Diego.

The USS Midway tour is interesting and informative. The self guided audio tour allows you to look around at your own pace. It's hard to picture what the floating "city" would be like during work/battle times. The quarters are quite small and to know there were 4500 crew members on board most of the time. Plenty to do for the whole family from flight simulators, historical videos, Midway theater, cafe & gift shop.

Be careful if you park at a 3 hour meter. We were at the midway for longer than that. By tickets online in advance, its cheaper and you don't have to wait in line at ticket booth. Lots of up and down narrow/ sheep stairs, no skirts ladies. General price includes person handle audio boxes that you hold up to displays all around ship to narrate. They work great and give wonderful information. Also many docents and staff around to answer questions. Take advantage of the opportunity to talk with them, many ex military with stories and more info to share. To keep ship clean they do not want you bringing in food/beverages. The do check bags for safety reasons. We had some snack bars with us and were discrete and had no problem.

Awesome experience. Buy your tickets online to save money and skip the ticket line. Plan 4 to 5 hrs to see the whole ship at a leisurely pace and do the island tour early as it gets more crowded later in the day.
