Skunk Train: Wolf Tree Turn from Willits

Overview
This 2 hour round trip will take you from the Willits valley floor to the highest point on our rail line. During this trip you will pass through Tunnel #2 and descend into the redwood-thick Noyo River Canyon – an amazing ecological wonderland, and an excellent opportunity to discover the mighty giants that made Mendocino County famous.

The train will stop briefly at Crowley while you enjoy the splendor of one of the oldest and most iconic trees along our route. The Wolf Tree was so named for the large growth off of one side – woodsman called these wolf trees because they choke out smaller trees and underbrush. Passengers are able to get off the train during our stop at Crowley, to better enjoy the views.

You'll make the trip to Crowley on board one of our historic Diesel-Electric engines.

Pleasant day and only a handful of riders on the train. Cars were clean and masks and social distancing observed by all. Conductor offered interesting commentary along the trip, but a drive in the Navarro Redwoods State Park offers significantly more redwoods if that’s what interests you in this trip. $2 for a handful (literally) of popcorn was a bit of a shock, even on a tourist event like this.

The ride was a fun and informative journey through the 'new growth' redwood forest - the old growth having been logged out a century ago to build Victorian San Francisco. I learned a lot from asking a few questions of our conductor and his answers made the views much more interesting. For example, redwoods grow in clay and take up a lot of silicate from the soil - they are essentially glass trees! Those that are hit by lightning will 'vitrify' and when cut down will shatter like glass. The few remaining old growth trees are those the old foresters recognized as having been hit by lightning and were left standing - they would not be good for lumber. Fascinating!

It was a blast. The open car where you stand is so much better for the view. It’s a good time to just put your camera down and be present in the moment. My favorite part was how kind everyone on the train passengers too, were. I definitely will be doing it again
