Skunk Train: Wolf Tree Turn from Willits

Overview
This 2 hour round trip will take you from the Willits valley floor to the highest point on our rail line. During this trip you will pass through Tunnel #2 and descend into the redwood-thick Noyo River Canyon – an amazing ecological wonderland, and an excellent opportunity to discover the mighty giants that made Mendocino County famous.

The train will stop briefly at Crowley while you enjoy the splendor of one of the oldest and most iconic trees along our route. The Wolf Tree was so named for the large growth off of one side – woodsman called these wolf trees because they choke out smaller trees and underbrush. Passengers are able to get off the train during our stop at Crowley, to better enjoy the views.

You'll make the trip to Crowley on board one of our historic Diesel-Electric engines.

Nature at it's best, just wish it was a little longer and more in the redwoods. It was worth $49 just to say you were on this amazing old train. We stood in the outside rail car and it was beautiful outside, not too hot. Everyone was great about social distancing and train was nice and clean. Popcorn was an added bonus. If you have time and just want to enjoy the fresh mountain air, take the trip.

Excellent Adventure riding the Skunk train. An AWESOME way to see the redwood trees. Everyone was friendly and helpful. So very glad we chose this trip to the wolf tree. Beautiful scenes and amazing experience. Breath taking. The outside car was thrilling to ride in. Make sure that you bring a jacket or sweatshirt! Loved that they had a snack bar too!

This was my first time on the Skunk Train. A bit disappointing. Short distance from Willits to Crowley. Scenery was more California Oaks & from pictures on website I was expecting more of the redwoods. I had traveled on the Durango to Silverton small gauge train in Colorado (pretty darn spectacular!) so I guess I was a bit spoiled. That being said, they had entertainment on the Skunk Train, which was fun. The other downside: on the way back, you are in the same seat (going backwards now), seeing the same scenery. If I do another ride, I will consider the one that leaves out of Fort Bragg. Otherwise, the people were gracious & all in all a pleasant trip. Part of our California history.
