What To Expect
1
Apache Trail Scenic Drive
Only minutes from the city, the Apache Trail is the perfect way to experience the beauty of the Sonoran desert. Arizona’s first designated “Historic Highway” and a scenic byway, the original Apache Trail was a footpath by which the local Apache Tribe traveled through the Superstition Mountains.

3
Canyon Lake
During your tour along the Apache Trail, you will also be treated to a steamboat cruise on Canyon Lake by the famous Dolly Steamboat.
4
Lost Dutchman State Park
Tortilla Flat has become a fixture of the Apache Trail since its inception in 1904. Not fire, drought, or bandits could destroy this hearty stage stop which holds onto its rich tradition through its architecture and unique decorating sense. If you get too warm, you can quite literally “saddle up” to the bar and enjoy a cold beverage to cool you down. This rugged landscape in the Sonoran Desert has been the jewel that some men were looking for with the most famous involving the Lost Dutchman Mine. Rumored to have found the largest gold vein in the west, German immigrant Jacob Waltz trusted his newly found gold deposit to no one and the secret of its location was buried with him. If you have the “golden eye” maybe you can spot it while on tour!
5
Tortilla Flat
Two of the more colorful stops along the Apache Trail are Goldfield Ghost Town and Tortilla Flat.
6
Goldfield Ghost Town
Goldfield, aptly named after the precious metal found in the area, was incorporated in 1892. For five long years this town was a gold miner’s paradise, however, soon after the vein stopped producing Goldfield quickly turned into a gold mining ghost town. During the tour you will have a chance to spend time in this restored ghost town practicing your gold panning techniques, marveling at the original mining gear, or even spending some time at Lu Lu’s Bordello if you dare.

We had a great day on the Apache Trail. Fantastic views of the mountains and lake and a great way to learn more about the area. Punctual pickup by our tour guide Guillermo ("Memo"). He turned out to be knowledgeable, service minded, a very safe driver, and had a very nice voice to listen to. The ride had several stops at interesting locations. Lots of cool things to see, such as the Apacheland Museum and Tortilla Flats, as well as a lovely boat ride on Canyon Lake. We always had cold water available in the van and restrooms were never far away. Lunch break was somewhat late in the day (2 pm), so we were glad to have snacks with us. There were, however, snacks available for purchase at the stops along the way. The boat had snacks as well as soft drinks and alcohol. Captain was excellent and pointed out things to see on the lake, such as mountain sheep and a bald eagle's nest. Lunch was in Goldfield ghost town, which had a couple of options. We opted for a burger in the saloon, which was pretty good. As far as walking, the tour mainly involved strolling around the sites, but no actual trekking, so that suited us very well since longer walks would have been challenging for us. A suggestion would be to give a more detailed timetable for the day, rather than just the pickup and drop off times. Overall, the views were spectacular, our guide was wonderful, and the comfort level was great.

I was not happy with this tour. Pick up and drop off were very inconvenient as I was staying with a friend and not in a hotel. Getting to the hotel the company rep told me to go to was not so bad, but getting back there was a nightmare. I had to be the last one dropped off on the way back because it was near the Detours offices - more convenient for the driver and company rather than me the paying customer. I ended up getting off the bus/van with the second to last drop off as it was actually closer to my friends house then the original place. I even recommended the driver just drop me at an exit (shopping mall) near my friend's home but he could not do that for whatever reason. Lacking in resourcefulness or out-of-the box thinking. The trip itself was rather boring and I believe it had to do with the driver. He did not seem to know about the area too much and gave little interesting facts. This was my first time taking a group tour and I was expecting a guide who would be more interactive and engaging - per the other reviews - but, I did not find that at all. I do not think I will book again with this company.
