What To Expect
1
Route 66
After departing the Phoenix metro area, our tour travels through the expansive Sonoran Desert filled with the native saguaro cactus. The scenery begins to change as we increase in elevation and views of the cactus fade into pine trees. As we continue further into Northern Arizona, we will travel the outskirts of the Route 66 town of Flagstaff and from the highway, see the San Francisco Peaks among the seemingly endless Ponderosa Pine Forest, the largest contiguous forest of ponderosa pines in the world.
2
Williams Depot
Williams will be our first stop along the tour for a chance to experience Route 66, the iconic American highway steeped in rich tradition. While in Williams, guests will have the opportunity to “get their kicks on Route 66” with walks along the original route, explore the local shops and capture souvenir photos highlighting a bygone era in classic American history. Also known as the Will Rodgers Highway, Route 66 is the most recognizable road in the United States and stretched 2,448 miles from Chicago to California upon completion.
3
Grand Canyon National Park
Just before entering the Grand Canyon National Park, you will be checked in for your 45 minute helicopter flight, spanning over 90 miles of the Grand Canyon. After your flight, your guide will bring you back into the National Park to discover more by foot. You will have opportunities to walk the rim, shop, capture an unlimited number of photographs, or relax with the best seat in the house. Your total time at Grand Canyon including the helicopter and walking is approximately 3 hours, with approximately 1-1.5 hours on the rim walking.

I am not much of a tour guy: I enjoy spending flex time on site. Confronted with the time and distance from Phoenix to the Grand Canyon and my own time constraints, I decided on the DETOURS tour. The operation is first rate; the tour guide was knowledgeable and kept us all in good spirits. I appreciated that there was time to go wander about though by necessity we had a regathering time so we could all get back on the bus and go to the next stop (bring some sort of timepiece). Likewise the helicopter pilot at Maverick was knowledgeable and a good entertainer. I wanted to see the canyon in its grandeur and as much of it as possible: the helicopter option was the way that made the most sense to me and I am glad I chose it. We flew from the south rim to and over the north rim and back over a time span of approximately 45 minutes. Note that a computer program (app) chooses the seating assignments for balanced weight distribution as this is a small aircraft (7 passengers plus pilot).

It was a long day, but it was worth it. 4 hours there and 4 back - a lot of travelling but that was the best way to see the Grand Canyon. We later made a trip to Sedona by car ourselves. I'm not sure if we had the best guide Memo (?) but he described enough things to make the journey interesting and we learned a lot about the plants and landscape. The helicopter ride was awesome and we would have really regretted it if we hadn't done it so really recommend.

Surprised my hubby with a birthday getaway to Arizona. We spent 3 days touring some of the state's best attractions. Steve guided us through the Grand Canyon and Sedona, and Montana was our guide through Tombstone. They were both awesome! Nice, friendly and a wealth of information. I'd travel with both of these guys again in a heartbeat. Thanks for a wonderful experience! SD
