What to Expect: We care about your health and safety. Please note that as of August 19, 2021, New York City is requiring a COVID-19 vaccination for admission to the Guggenheim for anyone who is eligible. At arrival, you will need to present valid vaccination documentation and a photo ID prior to gaining entry to the museum. Proof of vaccination may include NYC COVID Safe app, New York State Excelsior Pass, CDC Vaccination Card (or photo), NYC Vaccination Record, or an official immunization record from outside NYC or the U.S. More information can be found here. Children below the age of 12 will be allowed in with a vaccinated adult.

You’ll need to wear a three-ply mask regardless of vaccination status — staff is required to, too — practice social distancing, wash or sanitize your hands frequently, and pack light as our coat check is temporarily closed. Please plan ahead and read COVID-19 Safety Measures:

Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum

An internationally renowned art museum and one of the most significant architectural icons of the 20th century, the Guggenheim Museum in New York is at once a vital cultural center, an educational institution, and the heart of an international network of museums. Kandinsky exhibit was wonderful. Viator’s website did not actually produce tickets and it took extra effort at the museum center to verify ticket purchase.

Go for the architecture, but not for the art. The main collection is paintings every few steps around the spiral. When we visited, there was one of a bonafide artist for about ⅔s of the spiral. He wasn’t quite my cup of a tea, but I understand why he’s in a museum. The rest of the spiral consisted of canvases with a few straight pencil lines, maybe one swipe of paint, or were just two panels of acoustic soundproofing material glued together. Maybe I’m not artsy enough to appreciate this type of “work”… or maybe I just don’t want to pay $25/ticket to see something that I could produce myself if given an elementary school art classroom and 20 minutes. The best part was the Thannhauser Collection - one room in a corner with Monet, Manet, Van Gogh, Picasso, etc. That’s the only thing in the place that was worth admission to see - other than getting to walk through a decently cool building, and peer over the side to see up or down at the other levels every so often. As someone who lives locally and didn’t waste a whole day to go here, I’m not terribly disappointed in being able to check it off the list and know what it’s like for myself. But if you’re visiting from out of town, and have to choose between spending time here or just walking past and going somewhere better… my vote is certainly not for spending money on the art here. Keep looking.

Visited with high expectations but a bit disappointed. Lack of guidance about best or suggested way to tour. Easy to miss out the permanent collection altogether. Hundreds of staff, none of whom seemed engaging at all in suggesting a route through. Some of the paintings / exhibits totally baffling. Need expalnations Most impressive was the architecture of the building itself
