Iām honestly baffled by reading these other reviews and wondering how people had such drastically different experiences than we did. Iāve done wine tours before, and this was the most unprofessional and poorly organized tour Iāve ever been on. Are there two Toms employed by the company, and we got the bad one? Was the Tom in the other reviews possessed by an evil spirit just before our tour? Should I pray for him and for exorcism? Did he wake up the morning of our tour and think, ā You know what, screw this, I donāt like this job anymore.ā We will never know.
More and more of my lady friends are married and with kids, and time off is harder to come by with age/responsibilities, so we donāt get together as often and wanted to make it special. We decided to do something different and book a winery tour ($100 per person) and a 5-course vineyard dinner with a private chef ($200 pp). My friend found this company and booked based on the great reviews and that it also happened to be the cheapest (never again). We were told that there would be a mandatory 20% gratuity added to the dinner, which we were fine with. We were all looking forward to it.
As we pulled up to our Airbnb on the day of the dinner, we received a call from Tom. He told us that unfortunately, the chef had recently had a heart attack, so he wanted to offer us a dinner at a barrel tasting event for members of that winery (he said he ādidnāt knowā when we asked which winery) where we could make our own tacos. There was never an apologyā¦. apologies or accountability donāt seem to be his thing. He also never offered a discount, and when we asked, he called back to say it would be $115 per person with gratuity. Although we felt badly for what happened to the chef, doesnāt he have a backup for cases like this? Werenāt servers already hired and food already purchased, if this was 11AM the day of? After discussing with the group, we told Tom that we were looking forward to treating ourselves to a nice, private dinner, and making our own tacos wasnāt quite the same. We are mostly from Los Angeles too (so we know we didnāt need to pay $115 for good tacos) and many of the group members were already in wine clubs with free events like this. Instead of refunding us our money, Tom seemed to drag it out for as long as he couldā¦. He called the next morning to say that he was trying to get a chef for that night instead. He told my friend that he still wanted to find a way to make it happen because he āstill wanted the gratuity.ā Classy, right? As of lunch time that day, he still said he was āworking onā that nightās dinner, so we told him we were making reservations elsewhere and would just like a refund. His reply was āThatās going to hurt.ā
Throughout this ordeal, we were still nice and professional about the whole thing, mostly because we had to deal with this guy as our winery tour driver the whole next day. The tour was an absolute disaster.
- He had oversold his shuttle van, forcing 4 people to squeeze into the back seat without enough space.
- He hadnāt cleaned out the back of the van, so there wasnāt enough space for our purchases.
- Although the website mentioned that the tour experience offered being able to play our own music in the van, he refused to let us do so because he needed the auxiliary cable for directions. Umā¦. If you give this same tour to the same wineries every weekend, why do you need directions?
- Although my friend had asked that we get to experience smaller, boutique wineries, he took us to the large, commonly known ones without making reservations. He also only took us to 3 wineries because he āwanted to go home,ā and the tour was cut short and over by 3:30. With how much he expressed wanting to make as much money as he could, we think he was trying to pocket as much money as he could without having to pay another round of tasting fees.
- When we asked him to take photos of our group, his response was āI donāt want to take a lot of photos, I want to go home.ā
- On two different occasions, my friends overheard him complaining about us to other shuttle drivers, during the winery visits. āI have 6 ladies and 2 couples, itās been a long day,ā was one of the statements we heard. Really professional. At least wait until theyāre gone to complain about your clients.
- At the second winery, Tom left to pick up sandwiches for the group, and he set a table with a wrapped sandwich with a number on it for each setting. We had pre-ordered the sandwiches, and some people had allergies. We asked which sandwich was which, if he had the list of who ordered what, or if he at least had a menu. He didnāt seem to care at all and gave us an attitude of ājust eat whatās in front of you.ā A few of us had to Google the menu and open the sandwiches, trading after we figured out what was what, and he had ordered the wrong sandwiches for some people. No apology or offer to make it right or to pick up another sandwich; he just walked away.
It was absolutely shocking how rude, apathetic, and unprofessional this guy was. None of us could figure out why he was in this job, as he didnāt seem to enjoy it at all. Throughout the day, we encountered other tour drivers who chatted with us, ran over to offer to take photos of our group, and didnāt seem like they hated their tour groups or just saw them as dollar signsā¦ā¦ we looked longingly at those groups and wished we could join them instead. Looking back, we should have told Tom to leave us at the last vineyard so that we could Uber home or to another spot, and continue having fun without his attitude and negativity.
I still canāt believe what a bad experience this was, and I hope Tom strongly considers changing professions because itās obvious he doesnāt like this one or his clients.
