Iām adding to the general consensus here: this is a wine enthusiastsā tour. Expect to learn a lot about wine, meet some extremely knowledgeable people, and come home with some very nice wines at extremely attractive prices. Partiers please look elsewhere or risk being disappointed b/c this tour is all about the wine. Besides, there are plenty of wineries in Solvang where you can get nice and drunk with your friends and wonāt have to drive if youāre staying locally.
Iāve attached the Andrew Murray list from the dayās tasting, as well as a few pics from the day, including a bottle shot of the amazing wines we ālearnedā on at the first winery. This is an important feature of the tour Tom provides since the winery is private (no other way to visit), the winemaker and owner Jerry is extremely knowledgeable and informative, and he graciously gave us two-ounce pours of his six selections. (Think about this carefully: a minimum two-ounce pour times six wines times three vineyards - if you donāt want to be smashing drunk before arriving at the third winery of the day, youāre going to want to know how to taste wisely and that makes the first stop of the tour invaluable.) No spoiler alert here: the wine club and its benefits are also an amazing value. This was the only winery that included an olive oil tasing, also delicious.
Andrew Murray wines are delightful. Their Foxen Trail winery is more of a high-end boutique setting, so youāll need to ask questions if you want the expertise of the servers...no question is too silly, and since you will have had the benefit of a great education at the first stop, regardless of how much you knew about wine before this tour, your questions to the staff at the next two wineries will be much better ones.
The six wines on the Andrew Murray tasting that day were all quite different, but servers will often respond graciously if youāre more interested in a specific flight of varietals or comparing two similar wines. Please keep in mind that, although the wineries really want to sell wine, theyāre much more interested in people who are curious about their specific wines and show it. I felt that the knowledge shared by servers and staff was a big, helpful part of each purchase I made.
Lunch was enough, delicious, served with a convivial flair, and sitting at a picnic table under the oaks was beautiful. Only observation Iād make is that, at this point in the tasting, we ought to have purchased an add-on cheese plate from the Andrew Murray refrigerated offerings to help settle the first twelve wines....for a few bucks it would have made the last stop more enjoyable....
The final stop of the day was at Dierburg / Star Lane off the road to Lompoc. This winery has the elegant feel one expects at a boutique winery but with a more down to earth flavor. The tasting was enjoyable but we were a bit spent by then (why didnāt we get that cheese plate?) and didnāt offer the kind of curiosity weād brought to the first two tastings of the day. That said, there were two Pinot noir in the tasting, and even after the whole dayās controlled Bacchanal, the subtleties of both were obvious, which really speaks to the quality of the education we received and the excellence of the wine.
Tom really has something here...provided your expectations are clear, Iām quite sure you will agree with my five-star rating and that your tour will also be amazing.
