What To Expect

Talkeetna Air Taxi

You will start your excursion by checking into our log cabin office at the Talkeetna State Airport 45 minutes prior to your flight departure. Be sure to bring your sunglasses, light jacket (in the summer) and plenty of memory on your camera. Board our ski-equipped aircraft and enjoy your pilots' commentary about the geological history and local wildlife on your individual headset. Continue your flight above Talkeetna and over the river systems of the Susitna valley as you enter into an incredible landscape of icefalls, glaciers and snow peaks. You'll be awed by the Great Gorge of the Ruth Glacier, filled with a 4,000 foot thick river of ice, making this one of the deepest gorges in the world. Add a glacier landing onto your trip for a highlight of your Alaska vacation. This will add 30 minutes onto your trip time for this chance to bask in awe inspiring scenery.

As one would expect, landing on Ruth glacier was magnificent, austere and gorgeous: The tour was just as billed. What was surprising was the level of service: we were picked up from the train, stowed our luggage in their office, were offered an earlier flight than our reservation, ate a picnic lunch on one of their three picnic tables after, and then they drove us into town to walk around, and then picked us up to get our luggage, and then drove us to our b and b outside of town. So they made our whole day in Talkeetna easy as pie. And this was AFTER we’d already had our flightseeing tour, their bread and butter.

The Southside Explorer flight was an experience my husband and I will never forget. We can’t give enough kudos to the entire staff of The Talkeetna Air Taxi Glacier Landing Company. From purchasing the tickets, being sized for cleats over our hiking boots, loading us into a 6-7 passenger plane, and giving clear instructions prior to flight - this group worked as a precise machine - with personality. Our pilot/flight guide Michael, was wonderful, knowledgeable about the Glacier/rock formations and very helpful (was always watching out for us, answering our questions and taking our pictures while on the Glacier). One extra - an introduction to the Don Sheldon Ampitheater/Lodge. Google it. It is amazing to see this building among the mountains! The flight back to the air strip continued to be just as interesting as the first half of the trip. Be sure to look for houses / homesteads tucked away in the trees far from roads (families who live in the bush). The Talkeetna Air Taxi is a great way to gain a very interesting/ different perspective of Alaska.

What an AMAZING experience. Leighan, our pilot, was knowledgeable and really awesome. My boys (twin 7 year olds) loved their snowball fight up there. We lucked out and had one of the top 10% clear days for our flight (according to our pilot). It was breathtaking up there being so close to the peaks. Cannot recommend this enough!
