Not gonna lie, when the van rolled up, I was thinking "HMMM, this will be interesting" because it was a van, a small van, not a larger one like typical tours. Because this is not typical- it is THE tour you need to take! Tony was our tour guide and he is his own Tour De Force! Not originally from Alaska, but genuinely expresses it as his true heart. He is knowledgeable, articulate and paints a colorful picture of history, community and experiences. Because it is a small van, this tour is personalized and intimate. There was 1 other couple, a little older, and Tony was a true gentleman and made certain they were safe and well cared for during our adventure, taking their arms on the slickery ice. Tony took us to Chena Hot Springs, which is just fabulous! An Ice Museum, which is an amazing feat of art and architecture, with an ice bar with appletini's that warm you from the inside out. After the ice bar/museum experience, it's off to dinner. The food at the hot springs would rival any cosmopolitan cuisine in any big city, and the service was attentive. After dinner, Tony, who is as interesting as he is interested in you and your life, takes you into the hot springs. And it's hot in certain places, but not uncomfortable. We were worried the Aurora wouldn't show, but this night was magical (and I'd love to give Tony the credit, but this was all nature and whatever God you choose to believe in). Even the locals were stunned by how she showed up in fierce force with the most majestic colors and streaks - and watching it from the hot springs is divine! After, Tony took us down the hill, but again, being an intuitive tour guide, he pulled off in several areas to continue to chase the lights (which he continues to be awed by and is pretty intelligent on the topic) and made certain we were able to eek out as much of the night and lights as possible. I cannot gush enough about this tour, this guide and this night.
