Sunset Bioluminescence Tour

Overview
Sunset is a magical time on the Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge. There is movement everywhere. Dolphins are rounding up their dinner, manatees are moving into the shallows to find a comfortable spot to spend the night. As the light fades and the sky ignites with dynamics color, “Mullethead Island,” a federally protected rookery, buzzes with activity as many of the refuge’s 358 unique bird species flock above you to their protected nests for the night. Typical species to expect include Ibis, herons, egrets, pelicans, cormorants, and roseate spoonbills, all set to the backdrop of rocket launch pads and iconic NASA landscape. Launch into your escape.

We booked a visit to do the bioluminescence tour at night. The video on their website is pretty misleading of what the typical experience is. I’m not even upset about that part… I just wish that would have been more clear because I think I’d rather have had a morning tour knowing the water wasn’t that bright. Our guides were great and I still had fun… but wouldn’t waste my money again on the night tour is all.

This was incredible! We did the Sunset and Bioluminescence tour. Devin was a phenomenal guide, very knowledgable and provided an experience customized to our group. We saw y dolphins, 10+ manatees and were able to get within a paddles distance of them. Loved playing in the algae and comb jellies after dark. Easily the highlight of our trip. Highly recommend brining lots of bug spray.

Amazing experience, stunning sunset. We saw manatees, dolphins, and many birds. The sparkling bioluminescence was also magical. Most importantly, our guide Alex was as welcoming and kind as knowledgeable!
