Sunset Bioluminescence Tour

Overview
Sunset is a magical time on the Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge. There is movement everywhere. Dolphins are rounding up their dinner, manatees are moving into the shallows to find a comfortable spot to spend the night. As the light fades and the sky ignites with dynamics color, “Mullethead Island,” a federally protected rookery, buzzes with activity as many of the refuge’s 358 unique bird species flock above you to their protected nests for the night. Typical species to expect include Ibis, herons, egrets, pelicans, cormorants, and roseate spoonbills, all set to the backdrop of rocket launch pads and iconic NASA landscape. Launch into your escape.

My husband and I found this trip very last minute and decided to book it with no expectations whatsoever. I did my research and found out that the best time to see the brightest bioluminescence is when the moon isn’t out, so plan accordingly! Brandi was our tour guide and was amazing! She was very knowledgeable and you could tell how passionate she was about the outdoors. I learned many things from her and had an amazing time. Although we went at the end of the season, it was still very bright and easy to see while paddling or putting your hands in the water. This was such a great experience and it was worth every dollar. Whenever I am back in Florida I will definitely do again!

Drove up from West Palm Beach for this and it was so worth it!! Alex was our guide and he was knowledgeable, entertaining and made the trip safe and awesome. Started out close to sunset and paddled out to bird island along with the dolphins and saw so many amazing birds and a beautiful sunset. Was a little worried we wouldn’t see the bioluminescence as it was late October but Alex didn’t disappoint!! It was amazing as our hands sparkled in the water was definitely a memorable experience I will be doing again! Added bonus was the stargazing the sky was amazing🤩
