Sunset Bioluminescence Tour

Overview
Sunset is a magical time on the Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge. There is movement everywhere. Dolphins are rounding up their dinner, manatees are moving into the shallows to find a comfortable spot to spend the night. As the light fades and the sky ignites with dynamics color, “Mullethead Island,” a federally protected rookery, buzzes with activity as many of the refuge’s 358 unique bird species flock above you to their protected nests for the night. Typical species to expect include Ibis, herons, egrets, pelicans, cormorants, and roseate spoonbills, all set to the backdrop of rocket launch pads and iconic NASA landscape. Launch into your escape.

I previously did the bioluminescence tour in the summer & returned last night for the Mondo Combo tour. We started our paddle learning about the various species of wildlife we may encounter. We saw many manatee & comb jellies early on. Alex educated us on all the species of birds we were seeing including a King Fisher one I’ve never seen before. He told us interesting facts about the wildlife refuge, ecosystem & NASA. I felt safe with Alex. Our tour included myself & two groups of people. We saw a beautiful sunset as we paddled to bird island. Alex pointed out different types of pelicans, comorants, great egrets, cranes, and my favorite the rosate spoonbill. We laughed a lot on the tour and we learned a lot as well. Alex netted some comb jellies for us as the sun went down, and gave us a close up look at these creatures. Don’t forget to look up at the stars, as Alex pointed out, there’s no light pollution obstructing the sky. We look all kept saying how amazing everything was. Still smiling today. Magnificent tour experience for kayakers of all levels.

Our guide Alex was top notch. Not only was he super knowledgeable but he made this experience phenomenal. Last minute we made plans, got lost on the way and he was so patient with us. Would recommend A day away and Alex. We'll for sure be back.

Our tour guide was Alex, he was nice, friendly and knowledgeable. Showed many things around the canal. Wasn’t able to see any manatee but we saw a group of dolphins. Overall it was a great experience, would definitely go again in the future!
