What To Expect

Kilauea
Kilauea is one of the most active volcanoes on earth and has been continuously erupting since 1974. Here we will explore the East Rift Zone of Kilauea, including Kilauea Crater, Pu’u O’o Vent and it’s lava flows that are currently entering the Pacific Ocean. The tour will then fly north up the windward side of the island passing Hilo town, the wettest town on earth and the heavenly Hamakua Coast. Then we will whisk you up north to explore the seven windward valleys of Kohala. First stop is the windward side of the Kohala Mountains where we will fly the coastline of Waipio Valley and then move westward to Waimanu Valley. Waimanu can experience annual rainfall of up to 200 inches, fueling 1500+ ft waterfalls, some of the tallest in all of Hawaii.

Awesome experience! This tour was definitely THE HIGHLIGHT of my trip to the Big Island! We had a private tour which was stunning and relaxing at the same time. Ben (our pilot) was very informative and a pleasure. We learned so much about the island. Seeing lava flowing into the pacific is pretty cool! I have experienced many helicopter tours in my travels and this by far has been the best experience. No sharing the tour with complete strangers or struggling to see the sights due to limited views from the helicopter. Not with Mauna Loa Tours! I loved the full view windows with this helicopter and the stadium seating. Every seat was perfect! Thank you Mauna Loa!

We hired Mauna Loa for a full island helicopter tour on Feb 21, 2017. There were three of us and we selected the 3-person helicopter. Jonas was our pilot. The tour was awesome and I highly recommend Mauna Loa if considering a helicopter tour of the Big Island. The staff, especially Stephany, is very friendly and courteous. Jonas is very knowledgeable of the island, steady at the helm and is, in general, just a very nice guy. Calm and kind. The tour takes you all over the Island into the Valley of the Kings where you see countless waterfalls, some 2000 feet in length. The highlight, though, is when they fly over the active volcano and the lava flow from Kilauea. Simply stunning and you get views of a lifetime. Highly recommended.

Outstanding experience! Our primary reason for visiting the Big Island was to see the volcanoes and lava flows. Helicopter is the best/only way to truly see them. The rest of the flight was just a bonus, flying into the valleys and up to the waterfalls, and over the beautiful coast line. Mauna Loa provides a very personal and unique experience, even with the option of a set-down mid-way through the trip. You are literally "one-on-one" with the pilot who is extremely knowledgeable about the island. Pricey? Depends on your perspective. If you want up close and personal, this small helicopter experience is the only way to go. We did this trip on our first day which really helped us plan the rest of the week. We have used helicopter tours in several places around the world (at least 4 other times) and this was one of the top two. The other was also a small helicopter chartered just for three of us. You can't beat the experience!
